Summer is right around the corner and we’re all counting down the days until finals are over. But what happens after finals? No plans? Summer break is the prime opportunity to land a temporary job to make some extra cash. However are you wondering where to apply? No worries! We have some tips for you.

If You Love Kids…
Become a nanny! And I don’t mean a grandma! In many families, both parents have full-time jobs year-round and need someone to care for their kids during the day when they aren’t in school. If you are good with kids, this might be the job for you. Nannying is usually a good-paying job and has many perks. For instance, when the parents want you to take the kids somewhere, they will typically pay for you as well. Many parents prefer nannies with babysitting experience and having things like CPR certification and first-aid training can be helpful. Ask around for families looking for a nanny. Sometimes these jobs are even posted on Craigslist!

If You Are A People-Person…
Apply for a customer service job. Hostessing and serving can be very rewarding jobs. Typically these jobs will start out making $2.13 with tips. The good thing about tips is that you are constantly seeing the fruits of your labor rather than having to wait for payday to get a big check. You must have a lot of patience to be able to wait on guests and sometimes serving a lot of people at once can be stressful, but the people you meet throughout the day will surely put a smile on your face. And if you catch the regulars, chances are they tip well!

Working in retail can also be fun. Often people will ask you for fashion advice and you’ll probably get a sweet discount on the clothes.

If You Like the Outdoors…
Get an outdoor job! The possibilities are endless – lifeguarding has advantages because typically you get free access to the pool (or lake, or whatever) and by the end of the summer you’ll have an awesome tan. A disadvantage can be having to take a lifeguarding certification class, but it should pay for itself if you get the job.

Adventure sports are also good to get involved in. Many business need experienced workers to serve as guides, trainers and assistants. Think canoeing, kayaking, white water rafting, caving, rock climbing, biking, hiking and camping.

Another option is to become a summer camp counselor or staff member. Most summer camps spend a lot of time outdoors and depending on where it is, it could also function as a summer getaway for you!

If You’re A Music Junkie…
Look for openings at local venues – big or small. You might get to be a part of the behind-the-scenes action and maybe even meet some important (or famous) people while you’re at it. All of your friends will be j-e-a-l-o-u-s.

If You’re An Animal Lover…
Look for jobs at animal shelters, humane societies, pet grooming stores, and simply pet stores. You’ll be surrounded by your favorite furry friends and you’ll also learn a lot about animal behavior and how to take care of them. Having jobs like these is like having a bunch of different pets without the responsibility of being an owner. It’s perfect!
