New York Fashion Week Trends You Can Wear Now

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

New York became a madhouse from the normal hustle and bustle as New York Fashion Week came in full force during the beginning of September. There was a plethora of new, fresh, designers bringing bold statements to the runway. Fashion power houses, such as Celine, presented the world with a brand-new face and designs.

This fashion week has proven that cargo pants are still here to stay, blazers are still making a powerful statement and floral dresses are still all the rage. With every new year, however, there comes new trends. Although runway looks tend to be over the top, here are the trends that you can easily transition into your wardrobe:

1. Fringe

Twirl your heart away because fringe is making a massive come back! Designers like Oscar de la Renta featured fringed trimming along silk skirts and flowing from the ends of beautifully beaded gowns. Calvin Klein’s collection was inspired by the movie “Jaws,” and incorporated neoprene fabrics and fringe as an accessory for blazers.

2. Flip flops

Bring those Havianas back out because flip flops are the shoe to wear with any and all dresses for your spring or summer 2019 look. Dion Lee featured white flip flops with silk slip dresses. Prada paired an edgy take on flip flops with more structured pieces such as blazers. The plastic flip flops aren’t the only form of flip flops hitting the run way. Tibi debuted leather flip flops for the collection and Michael Kors structured them out of braided rope. They’re easy, comfortable, and can go with anything.

3. Neon

Be ready to set aside your all black outfits and make room for neon pieces! Bright, primary colors have been a popular debut in collections from Prada, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, Prabal Gurung and Rodarte. Colors are scary, but let this be an opportunity for you to make a bold statement with your wardrobe!

4. Patchwork

Patchwork is an easy way to create different textiles, bring more dimension and even re-purpose other fabrics. Monse is an amazing example of patchwork on the runway. Their clothes are mixed and matched with other textures and patterns while being manipulated into a completely different way. Self-Portrait also showcased patchwork by using different colored fabrics to act as accents or contrasts to the base fabrics.

5. Big Bags

Micro bags have been dominating the handbag industry for the past year and the time of impracticality has finally come to an end. Big tote bags, woven bags and even fanny packs are here to help free our hands and further our hoarding tendencies. Tory Burch, Porenza Schouler and 3.1 Philip Lim have all debuted bigger bags.

Overall, this New York Fashion Week season has brought back the fun in fashion. Use these trends as a motive to experiment more and make even bigger statements!
