My Thoughts on the ‘Teen Mom 2’ Cast Member Fired for Homophobic Tweets

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

For those who don’t know, “Teen Mom 2” is a television program that has been airing on MTV since 2011. Teen Mom 2 focuses on five young mothers: Jenelle Evans, Chelsea Houska, Kailyn Lowry, Leah Messer and Briana Dejesus. Evans has had quite a journey throughout her time on “Teen Mom 2.” From losing custody of her son, Jace, being arrested on numerous occasions and multiple tumultuous relationships, Jenelle has been through a lot. However, this past year, Evans’s life changed when she married David Eason. According to Jenelle’s mom, Barbara, Eason is the “worst boyfriend she’s ever had.” However, Jenelle has stood by her husband in every situation.

Eason has sparked controversy in the media after tweeting homophobic tweets. In an argument with another user on Twitter, Eason said, “And just what makes you think you have the right to tell me how to be a parent? Because you think you know me? Lmao why don’t you go tell the homo and transgender parents to start teaching their kids better morals? Oh I forgot that’s supposed to be normal.” He tweeted several other offensive tweets to other users. These tweets angered many cast members of “Teen Mom 2” and the general public. There were even petitions to get Evans and Eason fired from the show. Due to the backlash, MTV proceeded to fire Eason. Personally, I am extremely happy that the MTV employees made the decision to fire him.

Evans has been supporting Eason throughout this backlash, saying that everyone is “overreacting” to his tweets. I understand if a wife needs to stay by their husband’s side in times of crisis, however, no one was overreacting to his tweets. Eason has every right to be fired. If a journalist or anyone with a job in media ever tweeted anything in that manner, they would be fired immediately. Eason is literally famous for being on a reality TV show. He’s in the public eye and gets paid for it, so he needs to maintain a certain image. His tweets were incredibly offensive and disrespectful to many people, so for Evans to say that people were overreacting from his post was equally as offensive.

As I’ve said before, if you’ve ever watched the television show “Teen Mom 2,” it’s common knowledge that Evans has been through a lot. She’s definitely been a controversial cast member of the television program for quite some time now, and that doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon. Personally, from what I’ve seen from the show, I don’t think that Eason is a good man and hopefully Evans figures that out one day.
