Member of the Week: Katlyn Pierre

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

Katlyn Pierre is a member of the Her Campus at VCU PR/Events team. She joined the Her Campus at VCU team during the spring 2016 semester. People love her positive attitude, and can’t help being motivated by this collegiette’s drive and dedication to everything that she does.

Hometown:

Born in Brooklyn, New York, raised in Manassas, Virginia (I’ll always say that I’m from New York though!)

Major (minors):

Mass Communications with a concentration in Public Relations and a minor in General Business (My family can’t remember it and I find that hilarious!)

Year:

Senior graduating in December

Why did you choose VCU?

My mom actually wanted me to go to George Mason because it was closer to home. I really wanted to get away from home after high school, so I turned in my application to Mason late (DON’T be like me!)  and I looked into VCU. It was kind of love at first sight because of the diverse atmosphere. It was VCU or nothing for me.

What is your favorite thing about VCU?

I love the people. VCU is such a diverse school and I love getting to know everyone. I’m always meeting new people through networking events which has given me so many opportunities I’m so grateful for.

What activities are you involved with around campus?

I have a couple of internships. I’m the VCU Libraries PR Intern–catch me on the VCU Snapchat! I’m interning for Christina Dick at her social media consulting agency, TFB Agency. I’m also a Campus Expansion Assistant for Her Campus!

As for organizations, I really wanted to get involved on campus. I’m a part of the Public Relations Student Society of America, Circle K International and Her Campus at VCU, of course!

Why did you decide to join Her Campus at VCU?

I was super interested in Her Campus at VCU after I collaborated with the girls for a different organization I was involved in. I fell in love with the girls and knew I wanted to be part of the organization.

What is your favorite Her Campus at VCU memory?

When I met the girls. Circle K International and Her Campus collaborated for an event to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness. I met a lot of the girls and they were so nice to me. We also raised over $200!

If you could give one piece of advice to VCU freshmen what would it be?

Get involved! Freshman year was very tough for me because I had a lot going on in my personal life. When I began getting involved in different organizations, I was able to fully immerse myself in the whole college experience. Join a club, and see how different your college life will be.

What is your dream job?

I would love to be the PR Director for Sephora. I’m obsessed with makeup!

Where do you want to live after graduation?

New York, I have a lot of family up there that I want to be close to.

What’s one thing you wish more people knew about you?

I’m actually pretty introverted. A lot of people think I’m extroverted because when they see me around a lot of people, I seem to be very talkative and loud. However, I love to stay in, reading a book or re-watching Moulin Rouge! for the millionth time. I get really tired and anxious when I’m around a lot of people.

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received?

Someone once told me that I look like Kerry Washington. It was completely a lie, but I was so flattered that I refused to let them take it back. She’s fabulous!

What is the theme song of your life?

Count on Me by Bruno Mars. I love that song so much and it’s really important to me that I’m always there for my friends.
