We’re finally experiencing some cold weather, some rain, and really windy days. Staying warm with all of our outside explorations is a must but staying warm doesn’t mean sacrificing style. It only means expanding it. There’s nothing wrong with keeping some of your favorite summer pieces handy because you can easily make it a fall outfit with layering things over or under it. But you will also need some basic fall/winter pieces as well. It’s all about layering!

Layering shorts:

Every girl has those amazing pair of ripped up denim vintage inspired shorts we always wore during the summer that we just don’t want to put up yet, so don’t. Wear them, just wear them differently, wear the shorts with an edgy screen tee or band t-shirt tucked in, layer that with a big chunky cardigan, motorcycle jacket or a flannel for warmth up top. Under the shorts wear thick opaque tights, thick warm mid-calf or over the knee socks, and combat boots or Converse.

For a less punk look keep the shorts on, with the opaque tights or even printed tights (polka dots, stripes, floral), a loose sweater in a fall color like maroon, mint, or mustard, a circle scarf, and any shoe; flats, booties, riding boots, anything! For a polished clean look, try a button up with the shorts, a blazer, tights, and cute flats, or cute loafers.

For a dressier trouser short, put on an off white or pop of color button up tucked in with a cute belt or a flowy long sleep tee shirt. Keep the opaque tights and put on loafers, flats, or oxfords. For outerwear put on a blazer, a stylized jacket, a vest or a big chunky cardigan to stay warm. Even try putting a button up on and a sweater over and popping the collar over the sweater for a cute preppy look.

Layering skirts:

Fall is the only time I wear skirts other than maxi skirts, because I love skirts with tights. Circle skirts or skater skirts, with tights, flats, loafers, oxfords, wedges, or flats look so adorable. For tops try a form fitted tucked in long sleeve(solid or printed) tucked in sweaters, button ups, and blazers.

Layer leggings:

Leggings are so easy to wear during all seasons, and easy to pair up.  For a cute equestrian look, put on good quality thick leggings (try putting tights under to stay really warm), a long button up or sweater to cover your bottom, an earth tone blazer, tan, off white, navy, taupe, black or any other neutral color and riding boots. This would be an easy look to change up with high waist pants or a colored skinny jean!

Another simple look is the legginings with a longer sweater, for outerwear put on an olive parka jacket or a neutral color utility jacket. Finish the look off with combat boots, riding boots, or booties and a scarf, it’s an easy way to make the jacket feminine, and stay warm. Even try this look with a dress!

Layering tops:

Tops are the simplest thing to layer, it’s all about different lengths, textures, and patterns. Some necessities in order to layer are, button ups, long sleeve solid or pattern tops, colored/ patterned sweaters, and turtlenecks, but not the really thick uncomfortable turtlenecks we wore as kids, get the tight tee shirt material ones, they’re not itchy and not too thick to where you can’t wear things over them.

For outerwear big chunky cardigans sometimes called boyfriend cardigans are great, blazers of all different colors and textures, jackets like parkas, pea coats, form fitted stylized jackets such as motorcycle or military jackets, and vests.

And last scarfs, they polish off every look nicely!

You can have so many different looks if you mix and match these pieces, I love mixing the hard motorcycle jacket or parka coat with feminine pieces like a flowy printed long sleeve or a bright button up and a scarf. The turtleneck looks great with fitted blazers, and any bottom. The cardigan can be thrown on over any look; I love them with high waist pants. Vests look great with button ups, turtlenecks, long sleeves and multiple bottoms, like skirts and color denim.

Remember layering is fun, try differing colors, prints and textures, have fun and explore different styles and always remember to put on under layers as well such as tights, cami’s, or tank tops for extra warmth!
