I Woke Up Early for a Week and Here’s What Happened

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

Everyone in college knows that unless you are a crazy morning person, you are rarely going to get up earlier than the exact amount of time you need to get ready for class. Normally, I get up about an hour and a half to an hour before class begins but this week I chose to get up two hours before my first class. Here is how it went:

Wednesday

The first day was rough. My classes on Wednesday start at 10 a.m. so I got up at 8 a.m. that morning. Most nights I stay up until about 1 a.m. just to finish homework and have a little me time before I go to sleep. I did see that by getting up early this first morning that I was not rushed at all and was able to make myself some breakfast instead of my usual just grab a pop tart and eat while walking to class.

Thursday

I think this was the hardest day for me because I have an 8 a.m. on Thursdays so that means I was up at 6 a.m. I am not going to lie, there was a huge temptation for me to hit the snooze button and roll back over for another hour of precious sleep. Not this morning, however. I got up and did my usual morning routine and even had a little bit of extra time to go over any material that I thought I may be missing before going to class. Although, this being said I did take a nap later in the day to make up for some lost sleep.

Friday

This day was easier to get up for since it was the last day of the school week. I actually felt super productive this day and got a lot done before the weekend, so it was not as stressful on Sunday night when I finished up what I had left.

The Weekend

Although I did not really have anything to do this weekend I got up about two hours earlier than I normally do on the weekend which was about 9 a.m. both days. They were not really that productive of days, but it still felt nice being able to get up and having a good amount of the day to do whatever.

Monday

I did not do as well this day because for whatever reason I felt super tired that day, so I decided to let myself sleep in half an hour more and got up around 8:30 a.m. Mondays tend to be a pretty hard day for me because it is the start of the week and there tends to be a lot of work placed on you for the week. I did, however, get a lot done this day, and I think that had something to do with getting myself and body into a better rhythm in the morning.

Tuesday

I got up around 7:30 a.m. this morning and I was actually able to go to the dining hall for breakfast, which for me is a pretty big accomplishment in the morning. The day went by pretty fast, and I was able to get a good amount of work done that night. Tuesdays also tend to be my long nights, so it was nice when my meeting got canceled because it allowed me to do more than I would usually get to do.

Wednesday

I almost failed this morning because when I woke up I pressed the stop button on my alarm and almost drifted back to sleep. Thankfully, my friend had texted me about five minutes later and woke me up to see if we would still be going to breakfast that morning. Although this day was pretty uneventful, it was a great day for productivity. I had a test the next day and managed to finish my studying for it in a good amount of time as well as keep a good mood during.

My thoughts overall were that I really would like to try to stick to a better schedule now that I know that it can really help my mood and my school work. I suggest trying this out for yourself, and don’t get discouraged if it does not go perfectly. Just keep trying until you find what works for you!
