How to Make Your Makeup Pop Behind Glasses

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

In the past year, I have unearthed a new love for all things makeup. Beforehand, I wouldn’t have known the difference between an Anastasia Glowkit and an Essence highlighter — that, of course, has changed and I now buy a little too much makeup than I can actually afford, but that’s another article for another time. Once I realized what exactly a smokey eye was and how winged eyeliner can change your entire life (trust me on this), I faced another challenge: I had worn glasses since third grade and had no plans to switch to contacts at any point in the foreseeable future.

How, exactly, was I supposed to make my fleeky cut crease, blinding highlight and liner sharp enough to kill a man noticeable past my glasses? Granted, I do not have huge, thick frames; but they still take away from the art I spend 30 minutes creating on my face.

I was stuck—I didn’t want to switch to contacts specifically for the nights my makeup looked especially good (I’m not THAT vain), but I didn’t want my #looks to get covered up by my frames.

I just recently found how to navigate that gray space — how to slay your glasses and still make your makeup the center of attention. It’s all about making your eye makeup so noticeable that it can’t get lost behind your frames and your lenses; whether that means a full out smokey eye or simple winged liner and mascara is up to you.

On my eyes, I’m wearing Anastasia Beverly Hills’ “Modern Renaissance” palette with ELF expert liquid liner in black.

Above is my favorite go-to look for wearing behind my glasses, which was actually incredibly simple and only took about 10 minutes (not including blending). As you can see, my eyeshadow is still visible and my eyeliner takes center stage, making it near impossible for my makeup to get lost behind my glasses. This is the key to really making your eyes pop behind your glasses, no matter how thick/thin/colorful the frames are. If your makeup is bold and noticeable, it cannot get lost.

Again, how exactly you want to make your eyes pop is really up to you — a bold wing usually works best for me and others who have glasses like mine and is my go-to, but whatever look makes you feel confident, bold and sexy; embrace it. Makeup is a way for us to feel empowered, and whatever makes you feel empowered you should run with and fully embrace. Go slay those glasses, work that updo, fleek that liner.
