Black History Month falls in February, and it is a month dedicated toward the celebration of achievements and advancements produced by African American and Black communities and their role in U.S. history. During this time, discussions and contributions from African American and Black people are exhibited in museums, throughout media and film. Today, there are also businesses that support, honor and advocate for the struggles and triumphs of the African American and Black community. Here are a few businesses and organizations that support Black History Month:

  1. Levi’s

The Inclusion & Belonging Officers of the Levi company have made it a priority to celebrate the triumphs of the Black community and commemorate Black History Month. This year they are going into partnership with artists and activists that discuss struggles and obstacles faced by the African American and Black community. Levi’s is taking this opportunity to highlight and honor these Black voices.

2. eBay

eBay is a widely known corporation that aims to facilitate sales between businesses and consumers, or consumers amongst each other. To honor Black History month, the corporation is hosting a series of virtual events such as Black cinema watch parties, panel discussions regarding the Black diaspora culture and reading books written by Black authors to children in elementary schools.

3. Target

Target is an extremely popular department store amongst college students. This year, the company is expanding its partnerships with small Black-owned businesses and historically Black universities to honor and support Black voices and leaders of the past. The company also has annual themes that represent the Black History Month collection of apparel and accessories. This year the theme is “Creating Our Own Future.”

4. Google

Google is also celebrating and commemorating Black History Month. The company is investing $50 million toward supporting scholarships and programs in historically Black universities, exploring stories of Black cultural heritage and creating free learning programs to raise awareness of the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Power Movement. Google is also supporting Black-owned businesses by providing free training and coaching programs.

5. Foot Locker

This year Foot Locker is celebrating Black History Month by honoring three Black photographers and showcasing their extraordinary talent with photoshoots from Home Grown brands. The company aims to immortalize Black voices and Black stories and make them heard.

Black History Month is a time to recognize, honor and celebrate the obstacles faced by the African American and Black community in the United States. Although Black History Month only occurs during February, it is important to pay a tribute to the generations of African Americans who struggled with receiving citizenship, equal rights and recognition for their achievements and accomplishments every day. A few corporations and companies who support Black History Month are listed above; there are many other organizations that have special events and panel discussions during this time to raise awareness. As college students in the United States, I believe it is our duty and our responsibility to advocate for and bring awareness to Black History month as well as support businesses that commemorate and honor African American and Black communities.
