Healthy Habits for the Start of the Semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

It’s time to say good bye to those summer days and welcome the new fall semester! As I go into my second week of the school year, I started to realize that I’m losing the healthy habits that I kept over the summer and having a hard time maintaining them as classes start to pick up. So here are some quick and easy ways to start your semester with some healthy habits!

1. Drink a LOT of water.

It may be the end of summer, but it sure doesn’t feel like it outside! After the recent heat wave last week (and my experience of almost passing out from the heat), make sure you are maintaining a heavy intake a water. Especially in this weather, it is better to drink between eight and 10 glasses a day. As busy college students, I know it’s hard to count how much water you actually drink, but mentally count your intake, just so you are refreshed and active when you are outside! If you want to spice up your water, add a fruit of your choice in your water bottle, like an orange slice!

2. Workout as long as your schedule permits.

Some people have this notion that if you go to the gym, it has to be a certain time limit. But honestly, there is no set rule of how long you have to work out. Personally, I make it a goal to work out everyday for at least 15 minutes. Those 15 minutes can go a long way because at the moment, I am active and working towards a goal. Whether it’s running or weight lifting, it is still positively affecting my body and mind. Work around your schedule and don’t get discouraged!

3. Eat for energy.

It’s really tempting to buy food, especially on campus. Although once in a while a burger won’t do anything, it’s important to keep a healthy diet. Don’t forget to add fruits and veggies on a daily basis. I like to carry some fruits (strawberries and blueberries) in a Ziploc bag before leaving for classes as something to snack on throughout the day. Get some of that iron in your body, like spinach or beans. Keeping a healthy diet will not only help you physically, but you will definitely get a boost of energy. Even more than coffee!

4. Take time for yourself.

As exciting as it is to reconnect with friends and make new ones, don’t forget to give time to yourself. Reconnecting with yourself will be so important in the long run of the semester when classes and stress take over. It is important to have some me-time and do something that you enjoy doing on your own. For example, during my me-time, I like to draw or read a book. You can do face masks, try out a new recipe or just watch a movie! It doesn’t have to be for a long time, but just enough to relax yourself!

5. Develop a night routine.

After a long day of classes, it’s nice to come back to your room and do something consistent. Try to keep it simple, relaxing and preparing for the next day. Put your phone somewhere not close to your bed. This way, you won’t be tempted to look at it before you sleep. Have your backpack ready for the next day. If you aren’t in a rush, a nice bath or face mask would be a good way to end your day!

Whether you are a freshman or a senior, it is always hectic at the start of the semester. The best way to tackle any obstacles is to take care of yourself and maintain healthy habits. Good luck!
