Everything You Wanted to Know About a Capsule Wardrobe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

Do you ever look in your closet and see hangers full of clothes but not one top looks appealing? If so, then this article is for you!

If you have never heard of a capsule wardrobe until now, well, neither had I until about a month ago. According to the creator, Susie Faux, “a capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don’t go out of fashion, such as skirts, trousers and coats, which can then be augmented with seasonal pieces.” A capsule wardrobe’s sole purpose is to make picking out your outfits easier. The idea is have a few main basic items to mix and match to create countless outfits that never go out of style and can be tweaked to wear year-round.

Downsizing your wardrobe to a capsule wardrobe can be beneficial in many ways. For one, it saves space! If you feel like your closet has a mind of it own and explodes every time you try to find something, trying out a capsule wardrobe could be for you. The idea of a capsule wardrobe is to have anywhere from as many or as few clothing items as you deem necessary to create outfits with.

Do you look at some of your clothes and realize you have not worn them in months, even years? A part of the capsule wardrobe idea is cleaning out your closet and getting rid (or donating) the clothes that do not bring you joy anymore. Have you ever looked at a top and remembered how much you loved to wear it in high school, but it just is not your style anymore? If you fall into this category then go through your clothe items one by one and decide if that clothing item brings you joy anymore. If not, then it could be time to let go. If you fall across your favorite band tee from the early 2000’s then keep it! The whole point of a capsule wardrobe is to get rid of what you do not wear and keep what you wear and love.

Along with the advantages there always *some* disadvantages. With a capsule wardrobe the disadvantages would be not having an abundance of clothing items and while that may save some space in your closet, you might end up regretting tossing away a pair of jeans you actually do love. Going through your closet can be challenging, but I have a solution for you. When going through your closet, set aside the clothes you are maybe unsure about getting rid of. Put all of those clothing items into a trash bag or box and store them somewhere for a month or so. If during that time you do not go out of your way to gain back those items then you will know for sure that you will be fine parting ways.

Here is an example of someone’s very simplistic and neutral colored capsule wardrobe:

Your capsule wardrobe, of course, can be any colors or clothing items that you love and prefer.
