9 Doctor Who Moments That Gives Us The Feels

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

“Doctor Who” is one of the most powerful shows on television. From the plot twists, the intriguing characters and the moments that will make you ugly cry, this show is definitely one worth watching. Here are some moments that will really hook you on this show and further more, if you already binge watch this show, you will definitely remember these scenes. Warning, spoilers ahead!

1. Fish Sticks and Custard

This is Matt Smith’s not only first scene as the Doctor, but also one of the most notable. Having just transitioned from Tennant in a little girl’s backyard in Scotland, the Doctor proceeds to raid her kitchen and make himself her role model. The Doctor and Amy will always have a special relationship and its roots are based off of a little girl “letting” a strange–and overly hungry–man into her kitchen. These first moments that the Doctor and Amy spend together creates the connection that Amy shares with all of us: The Doctor is so weird that you have to love him and know he’ll come to your rescue soon.

2. Ten and Rose’s Last Moments

At the end of episodes “Army of Ghosts” and “Doomsday,” Rose Tyler is sent to another dimension. The Doctor figures out a way to see her for a few more moments as a projection from the inside of the TARDIS. During their moment together, Rose reveals to the Doctor that the projection ended up happening in a place that loosely translates to “Bad Wolf Bay,” a phrase that holds strong meaning to long-time fans. Rose finally works up the courage to tell the Doctor she loves him, and right after, the projection ends and the Doctor’s projection disappears before he can say, “I love you” back. This episode holds a lot of meaning, because it is the exit of a character that a lot of women identity with, a strong female who is trying to find her place in the world.

3. Rory and Amy in general

By far these are an ultimate OTP. There is something so pure about their love throughout the story line. The fact that Rory would not give up on Amy in episode “The Girl Who Waited,” Amy stayed by Rory’s side in episode “Let’s Kill Hitler” and the extremely memorable episode “A Good Man Goes To War,” where they have a baby. This couple never fails to give us the feels and wish I had a relationship as wholesome and just amazing all together.

4. Rose and that frickin time vortex

In the episode “The Parting of Ways,” the Doctor and Rose are forced to confront the Daleks again. The Doctor sends Rose back to London, because he knows something major is going to go down. Rose and Mickey find a way to send the TARDIS back to him with her inside. During the travel, Rose absorbs all of the time vortex in a desperate attempt to save the Doctor’s life. This moment is especially important because it shows what lengths the Doctor’s companions, especially Rose, will go to be by the Doctors side, even when it puts them in extreme danger.

5. Rings of Akhaten

I was in love with this episode for so long and so intensely that my entire tumblr theme was based off of it. The extremely powerful monologue the Doctor recites to the “parasite God” shows how truly deep of a history the Doctor has with the universe. The enormity of what he had endured up to that point was too much for even a God to handle. This honestly just makes me fall in love with the Doctor every time I watch this episode. Also, that little girl is so stinkin adorable!

6. The War Doctor

There is just something so feelsy about watching the War Doctor walk through Gallifrey with it burning around him. The glue that keeps everyone coming back to Doctor Who over and over again is the pure amazingness and strength the Doctor carries with him at all times, even when watching his home planet die in front of his eyes. The fact that we as an audience were able to partake in witnessing the tragic event that was so talked about before we were able to see it made it all the better.

7. Madame du Pompadour

“The Girl in the Fireplace” is one of the most touching episodes of the modern series, taking place in both the past and the future. The Doctor and Rose land on a broken-down ship that is using parts of the human body to repair itself, with creatures that are made solely out of clockwork. This ship has latched onto one person in particular, Madame du Pompadour. There are doors into various points of her life trying to find a point when she is “done” and they can use a part of her body in the ship. This results in the Doctor visiting her throughout her life trying to find the machines that are trying to kill her. This episode shows the Doctor’s vulnerability, and is one of the best instances of his ability to interact with the past as a man of the future.

8. River Song

The mystery of River Song is so captivating, but the moment that really puts my love into place is the moment when the Doctor finds out just who she is. Looking at her name on her cot in episode “A Good Man Goes To War,” the Doctor breaks out in a dumb smile that melts my heart. He is so overjoyed to know that River will be safe and that all of the mayhem that just ensued will have a positive result. Also, Amy’s reaction to almost kill her daughter will keep you on the edge of your seat.

9. Vincent and The Doctor

This episode is the most important episode of Doctor Who to me. The Doctor and Amy have gone back in time to save Vincent van Gogh from a monster, and in doing so, try to save him from himself. After they work with him to kill the monster, Amy and the Doctor go back to the museum where they first noticed the mistake in one of his paintings. Amy is clearly hoping for there to be more paintings, as she wants Van Gogh’s life to have been extended by their showing him what a success he becomes. The Doctor notices Amy’s sadness and tries to make her feel better, resulting in my favorite quote in the entire show. This episode is my go-to when I’m sad and need to feel better about the world.
