5 Things to Do in Richmond When It Rains

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

Rainy days in Richmond CAN be miserable, but they don’t have to be. Here’s five ways to brighten up your gloomy day.

1. Visit a museum or two

Richmond has tons of museums and many of them are fairly close to VCU. From the Science Museum of Virginia to the Edgar Allen Poe Museum and all the others in between, you’re destined to find one that will pique your interest.

2. Check out a movie at the Byrd Theatre

Located in Carytown, the Byrd Theatre plays movies that are no longer shown in theatres for, wait for it… ONLY $1.99! The schedule for the movies changes each week and generally the theatre plays two movies each day, so if you didn’t catch a movie you were looking to see, just wait for it to play at the Byrd!

3. Drop by the Richmond Public Library

Looking for a new book to read on a rainy day? Pop in to the Richmond Public Library, and you’ll be guaranteed to find the book you want. Located at 101 E Franklin St., it’s only a short walk from VCU (or take the Campus Connector, it stops right there).

4. Visit (one of the many) locally-owned coffee shops

There are so many coffee shops in Richmond and they all have their own things to love about them. Whether you like the quiet, homey feel or the lively, urban vibe, you will find the place for you. Lift, Alchemy and Lamplighter are my personal favorites, but I definitely encourage you to try one of the many others on campus and around the Richmond community.

5. Take a break and go jump in those puddles

You may think rainy days are perfect for getting work done, but remember when you were a kid and all you wanted to do was jump in puddles? Well, why not grab a friend and relive those days? Trust me, with classes and work, playing in the rain is just the stress relief you need.

Hailey is a part-time photographer and full-time student, studying Biology at Virginia Commonwealth University in hopes of becoming a radiologist. In addition, she volunteers with various service organizations on campus. When she isn't volunteering or studying, Hailey enjoys judging coffee shops based on their caramel lattes, spending too much money on shoes, and exploring Richmond.
