There are just some things you don’t want to ask people– Like asking a science major questions about math, women in S.T.E.M. or tutoring. Follow the next few examples of what not to ask a science major:
1. So you’re good at math?
We all have issues of our own when it comes to math and just because we are science majors doesn’t mean math is an easy subject for us.
2. Can you tutor me in (place main subject of your major here)?
Does it look like I have time to tutor you? I already have three lab write-ups, four projects and a paper on photosynthesis due next week. Please use the campus learning center.
3. All you do in chemistry is blow stuff up, right?
Nope. Although when we do get to blow stuff up, which is very rare, it’s not a fun explosion.
4. What’s it like being a woman in your field?
This is a question only men seem to ask. Women can be whatever they want to be whether it be a doctor, a writer or a scientist. As a woman who is taking on a field full of men, it will be more difficult to stand out, but that will not stop me from trying.
5. Is (place your major here) hard?
I feel like this one explains itself.
Before you ask another question to a science major please make sure it’s not one of these.
