5 Local RVA Businesses You Should Support

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

In a world where a lot of our shopping can either be done at large chain stores or online retailers, the joys of local businesses have been lost. However, there are many fantastic businesses here in the Richmond, Virginia area that you should be supporting. Here are just a few.

1. The Carytown Market

The Carytown Market was created to give local farmers and producers of goods the opportunity to interact directly with consumers. The market not only offers visitors a chance to buy locally from area farmers, but also to shop at the many unique stores on Cary Street. The Carytown Market is located in downtown Carytown and is starting its season on Aug. 22, 2018 and will continue on every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. until late fall.

2. Carytown Burgers and Fries

Mike Barber, the business’ owner, finally settled in Richmond in 1997 before realizing his dream when he opened Carytown Burgers and Fries in 1999. It didn’t take long for CB&F to get noticed, winning Citysearch.com‘s “Best Burger” honors that very year. Through the years since it has been opened, they have successfully opened two more chains; one in Lakeside and one in Short Pump.

3. Mama J’s

Mama J’s is a family-owned and operated restaurant located in the Historic Jackson Ward of Richmond where it celebrates the family tradition of going to grandma’s house for Sunday dinner. With a vast array of mouth-watering favorites, Mama J’s combines great southern food with outstanding service in a relaxing atmosphere. The restaurant has also become “the” place for celebrity-spotting, from pro-athletes to Grammy-winning artists and elected officials.

4. Bremo Pharmacy

Local community pharmacies should be an important part of each family’s health care and a part of the community. This is what Dan Herbert, founder of Bremo Pharmacy, believed when he opened back in 1976. He envisioned a pharmacy that would help each person be as healthy as possible, by meeting their total and unique health needs. Secondly, he strived to provide service so good that no other pharmacy came close in comparison. Today, the Bremo Pharmacy helps its customers in many different ways, such as delivering medications to patients, compounding different medications and organizing medications.

5. RedRidge Pet Market

RedRidge Pet Market is a family-owned and operated pet supply market offering the branding of “Everything Natural.” They carefully select each their products, insuring that each brand offered meets their specific standards. They stock everything you could ever need for your little fur-baby.

These five local businesses are just a few of some of the great mom and pop shops that are becoming more prevalent in RVA and around the country. Remember the next time you are out to shop local.
