10 Struggles of Being an Ambivert

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

An ambivert is someone who has characteristics of both an introvert and an extrovert. You have your social moments and your loner moments, it all depends on your mood and the day. Here are 10 struggles that come with being an ambivert:

1. You are constantly torn between going out and staying in

You love meeting new people and going out with friends, but sometimes when you go out you regret not staying in bed and watching Netflix.

2. You love your friends, but you also need your alone time

You spend hours laughing and hanging out with your friends, but after a while all you want to do is relax in the comfort of your own home and bed alone.

3. People have a hard time trying to figure you out

One day you’re shy and quiet while the next you’re loud and annoying. The people around you can’t quite figure out your true personality.

4. You tend to overthink things

Because you are both an introvert and extrovert, you tend to look at things with both states of mind. Your mind goes into chaos mode while you try to figure out which way to think.

5. Sometimes it’s hard for you to make plans

When people ask you to make plans with them, it can be hard for you to decide if you want to or what kind of plans you’ll make. Will you want to be around people that day? Do you want to go on an adventure or would you rather have a movie night?

6. Your self-confidence is a roller coaster

You could be feeling confident and strong one day while the next you feel insecure and weak. Your self-confidence comes in waves and you never know how you’ll feel.

7. You get burnt out easily

If you spent the last couple of nights partying with your friends, there’s pretty much a guarantee you will be a home body for the next few days. You feel burnt out from being around so many people.

8. You are very determined but easily intimidated

The extroverted side of you loves to crush projects and tasks at work. But when someone does it better than you, the introverted side of you tends to praise them and hide under the radar.

9. You have mixed feelings about a big crowd of people

When it comes to a big crowd of people you either thrive off the company and possibilities of meeting others, or you feel like you’re drowning in a sea of people.

10. It’s hard for you to find balance

You try to balance your social life as much as you can, if you go out too much you feel completely drained and if you stay in too much you feel antisocial.

You’ve always questioned whether you were an introvert or an extrovert because you’ve always been a bit of both. Being an ambivert can be confusing and frustrating at times, but you always get the best of both worlds regardless.
