Autumn Style Icons You Can Take Inspiration From This Fall

Every autumn, many of us sit down to watch our favorite fall-inspired movies and TV shows. While these pieces of media entertain me, I also love to use the characters for fashion inspiration. Fall style is personally one of my favorites, so I’m always on the lookout for new pieces to add to my wardrobe. Here are some of my favorite style icons and how you can be inspired by them.

Rory Gilmore, Gilmore Girls

Rory Gilmore is one of the most iconic autumn style icons. She wears many chic fall outfits, and I especially like to take inspiration from how she pairs simple basics together to make a more elevated outfit. Rory can also provide inspiration for a multitude of style situations. Whether you’re copying a casual outfit with jeans of hers from season 1, a dressy outfit from her Sunday night dinners, or a preppy Yale outfit, Rory has an outfit for any occasion. Some pieces that you can adopt from Rory and bring into your closet are fitted sweaters, bootcut jeans, tall brown boots, velour skirts, and tortoise shell headbands.

Lorelai Gilmore, Gilmore Girls

If you’re looking for a more grown-up version of Rory’s style, you should definitely check out her mother, Lorelai Gilmore. Lorelai has looks for both business and casual settings. Some of my favorite outfits of hers include those in the later seasons, specifically when she’s running the Dragonfly Inn. Some pieces that you can steal from Lorelai are fitted tank tops, midi skirts, nostalgic graphic tees, leather jackets, and jean jackets.

Nancy Downs, The Craft

If you’re looking for more alternative inspiration this fall, look no further than Nancy Downs and the other witches from the cult classic 90s movie The Craft. While Nancy may be an evil character, she objectively has great style. I love how her outfits feature a mixture of both 80s and 90s goth inspiration. Some pieces that I would personally steal from her wardrobe to emulate her style are long black dresses, large silver cross necklaces, tops with bell sleeves, and black maxi skirts.

Sally Albright, When Harry Met Sally…

If you want to feel like the love interest from a classic rom-com, consider dressing like Sally Albright from When Harry Met Sally. Sally’s wardrobe consists of many business casual inspired outfits, while still emulating that cozy fall vibe. One of her most iconic pieces is her oversized sweater. Some pieces that really capture her style are black tights, fitted blazers, mom jeans, and a classic wool sweater.

Elaine, The Love Witch

Elaine from The Love Witch has a much more retro style. I love how she blends modern pieces with vintage ones, as well as her collection of statement jewelry. This film was also filmed in technicolor, so the bright colors of Elaine’s outfits stand out even more. Some of the pieces from her wardrobe that I take inspiration from are her 60s silhouettes, blue eyeshadow, loud colors, and statement necklaces.

Kathleen Kelly, You’ve Got Mail

Another rom-com protagonist that I absolutely adore is Kathleen Kelly from You’ve Got Mail, played by the iconic Meg Ryan. To me, Kathleen is the queen of autumn in New York City. Her wardrobe also adds to the vibe of her workplace, which is a family-owned children’s bookstore. Some of her most iconic pieces include turtle neck sweaters, button down blouses, plaid skirts, comfortable loafers, and sweater vests.

Nancy Wheeler, Stranger Things

Last but not least is one of my favorite fall icons, Nancy Wheeler. Her outfits in the first two seasons especially really feature that vintage fall aesthetic. I love her mixture of pastels with more traditional muted autumn colors, as well as her iconic 80s hair. My favorite pieces to steal from her are fitted sweaters, velour jeans, opaque tights, cocktail-length skirts, and fitted jackets.
