Your SOS Song Based on Your Zodiac Sign

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Vanderbilt chapter.

On December 9th, 2022, SZA released SOS, her first album since her 2017 debut album Ctrl. The support that SOS received allowed it to sit at the number one spot of the Billboard Top 200 (currently for third week in a row), accumulating more success than SZA foresaw. Following the release of SOS, SZA announced a 2023 North American tour in 17 major cities with guest Omar Apollo, an artist that gained prominence throughout 2022 in the pop sphere.

As SOS tops music charts in total streams and streams within the pop and R&B/Hip-hop genres, fans are raving about the album’s versatility and style, which appears to have expanded since SZA’s release of Ctrl. With all of the subliminal messages SZA has throughout the album, listeners have connected with each song in a different way, and many of these connections can be attributed to an individual’s zodiac sign. You could pull out your birth chart and make a playlist of with each SOS song in the order of your chart, or you can find the song associated with your main (sun) zodiac sign.

Find your SOS song below!

  1. Aries (March 21-April 19): Seek and Destroy

The forceful and outgoing fire sign is unafraid of doing what they need to to achieve their goals or accomplish what they believe is necessary. “Seek and Destroy” discusses SZA’s release from her relationship with someone that was draining her. By “ruining everything” in the relationship, SZA claims that she feels freer and that ending the relationship was necessary, despite the other person’s pain. She understood the reality of what was going on and knew it was pertinent for their relationship to end. SZA even concludes the song with a verse that says:

“All the pain I know

Is used to fuel my soul

No control

I do it to you”

This line proves she is channeling her pain with the knowledge that what she is doing will eventually lead to a positive outcome that will ultimately benefit her and her well-being. This is perfect for such a passionate sign that isn’t afraid to tackle conflict to achieve their desired outcome in life.

  1. Taurus (April 20-May 20): Open Arms (feat. Travis Scott)

Tauruses are stubborn, yet loving and loyal individuals that take their relationships seriously. “Open Arms” is about endless devotion to a person that may feel like your only hope, a person that has created an irreplaceable feeling that you never want to escape from. Throughout the song, SZA talks about her loyalty to a person she will continue to love no matter how much they may try to push her away, defining them as her pure source of self-esteem and stability. Travis Scott’s verse echoes similar sentiments of endless loyalty to a person. The song concludes with understanding that it may be necessary to let go of this person despite how essential that love is to her well-being and survival. The difficulty of understanding that while this attachment may feel essential, it is not the most healthy or sufficient thing for a person, represents the headstrong qualities of a Taurus. While they are stubborn, they have a firm understanding of their surroundings and are very self-aware, even in the light of extreme devotion to a person or thing.

  1. Gemini (May 21-June 20): Nobody Gets Me”

Geminis find expression, communication, and compassion in others very important. When a person understands their shifts in mood or behavior and is patient with them, they’re extremely appreciative and likely to stick around. They value the connections they make with others, and that message is reflected in “Nobody Gets Me.” Throughout the song, SZA cries about how a breakup with the person that understands her the most would make her feel, addressing that she knows she’s made errors in their relationship, but that nobody could replace the understanding and unconditional love she received from them. When a Gemini finds someone they can connect with and who allows them to express themselves freely, they have trouble letting go of that person when doing so becomes necessary.

  1. Cancer (June 21-July 22): “Special”

Cancers seek security in their relationships, but when their feelings and values are tested, they become very vulnerable and sentimental, and just want to gain a full understanding of their emotions. When they get close to people, they want to feel heard and understood, but when put into a scenario like in “Special,” where they’ll never feel like they’re enough for their significant other, they become frustrated and sensitive. They begin to wonder where they went wrong and act upon their feelings. In “Special,” SZA expresses how she just wants to feel like she is enough for the loser she’s dating and how she changed herself to feel like she could be enough, but understands she will never be enough when her partner sleeps with another person. The song is an emotional expression of how a person’s efforts may not have been good enough for someone they cared about, which is a key expression of emotion that a Cancer may appreciate on the album.

  1. Leo (July 23-August 22): “Kill Bill

Leos, the expressive, dramatic, and hopeful sign, seek action. Leos believe they are important and that their value should not be taken for granted. In “Kill Bill”, SZA threatens to kill her ex and her ex’s girlfriend because of how much she loved him and doesn’t want to see him with anyone besides her. As a fire sign, Leos are determined to take action to achieve what they want, and this song is a prime example of that. If SZA can’t have the man she wants, the only other option is to kill him. While this song is quite an extreme example of trying to attain what you want, Leos will do just about anything they can to achieve what they desire (even if it is getting the attention of the person they want the most).

  1. Virgo (August 23-September 22): “Far”

Virgos are fast-thinking perfectionists, and the cadence of SZA’s voice throughout her verses of “Far,” as she shifts from a fast pace to a slower one in the chorus, is reflective of the pace of a Virgo’s thoughts. Virgos know what they want and are unafraid of letting go of what is holding them back. While Virgos are well-versed in their needs, they also succumb to perfecting themselves to make the people around/important to them happy. In “Far,” SZA expresses how she is done tolerating the emotional abuses of her relationship and how she had changed herself completely for a person to whom she regrets delegating her efforts.

  1. Libra (September 23-October 22): “Snooze

Libras value their relationships, appreciate the one-on-one connections they foster with people, and are social butterflies. In “Snooze,” SZA sings about how her relationship makes her feel alive and how she wishes she could spend every possible moment with her partner. She describes her home as feeling empty without their presence, saying “Ain’t a home when you not here.” Her overarching message of appreciation for her partner and her effort in their relationship because of how they make her feel is an echo of the lover persona of a Libra and their appreciation for people and relationships.

  1. Scorpio (October 23-November 21): “Ghost in the Machine” (feat. Phoebe Bridgers)

Scorpios are extremely private and project themselves as individuals that are rough around the edges and mysterious. In “Ghost in the Machine,” SZA and Phoebe Bridgers sing as a person that has experienced the burden of emotional trauma, both in their relationships and in life. They shift from hating everyone to only wanting temporary relationships and asking others to wear a mask around them to make things easier. Bridgers’s verse replicates her thoughts in a fight she has with another person, and follows with several internal thoughts about her isolation and how she got herself to that point. Scorpios like to be in control of themselves and their relationships, and with the lyrics of “Ghost in the Machine,” the duo expresses how they’re tired of not being able to have control over their relationships and how they’re finally taking control, even if it means asking everyone to wear a mask.

  1. Sagittarius (November 22-December 21): “Good Days”

Sagittariuses are the unicorn of the zodiac. They’re free-spirited, wild, and adventure-seeking, with good intentions. They love to travel and seek new opportunities, and when you listen to “Good Days,” that’s exactly how you feel. “Good Days” is the most melodic of the songs on SOS, and although it was released almost two years before SOS, it remains beautiful and ethereal. “Good Days” is a song that defines the beauty of life, which is exactly what Sagittariuses look for in their travel and daily lives. This song is as enchanting as a Sagittarius is themself.

  1. Capricorn (December 22-January 19): “Used” (feat. Don Toliver)

Capricorns are another determined, loyal, earth sign that work hard to achieve their goals. They are (like several other signs) compassionate and caring in their relationships, but give what they receive and understand their worth. In “Used,” SZA battles her relationship struggles with friends and family, further wondering if the goals she is working toward were worth the people she has lost, specifically the relationship she lost with her partner. SZA understands that what she did may have hurt, but she questions if she could have tolerated her partner’s ego any longer. Capricorns are self-reflective and know their priorities, and will reflect on their relationships (both unhealthy and healthy) in the process of focusing on those priorities.

  1. Aquarius (January 20-February 18): “F2F

An Aquarius is the definition of unconventional. They do not chase after the traditionally easy route to a relationship and often find themselves in chaotic situations. “F2F” is the epitome of chaotic scenarios. The black-and-white nature of SZA’s relationship with the partner she sings about in “F2F” is messy, to say the least. SZA misses her partner’s presence and the physical relationship they had so much that she uses other people to fill the void. She talks about her physical desire for the relationship she had with that person but also discusses how her partner lacked the emotional empathy and connection with her that would warrant her wanting them to stick around. When an Aquarius falls, they fall hard, and if a physical attachment is what they need to replace the emotional connection they’re missing, they’ll do just that.

  1. Pisces (February 19-March 20): “Gone Girl”

Pisces are extremely empathetic and can pick up on when their feelings aren’t reciprocated. In “Gone Girl,” SZA sings about how her relationship with her partner is slowly fading due to a lack of proper communication, security, and honesty. SZA talks about how this put a strain on their relationship, causing her partner to “lose” her. Pisces don’t want to deal with significant emotional pain or damage, and will find ways to escape when they feel that things are wrong. If they can’t heal others, they will do whatever they can to heal themselves (after long reflection).
