Meet Sarah Staples, Co-President of Vanderbilt Variations

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Vanderbilt chapter.

Q:What does your position as Co-President of Variations entail?
A:I just schedule concert spaces, keep track of rehearsal attendances, all the super boring administration stuff. Really. It’s boring. I send a lot of reminder emails. And emails to alumni. I send so many emails.

Q:What do you love most about this position?
A:I really like singing and bossing people around. So those two things together are probably my favorite parts of the position!

Q:What has been your favorite performance?
A:Our Winter Concert last year was definitely my favorite. Well, our last performance is always my favorite, because I can really tell that we keep getting better as a group.

Q:What is your favorite memory while being a part of Variations?
A:Last winter we got the opportunity to record the first ever Vanderbilt Variations CD! We spent about 5-6 hours in a recording studio on a Saturday morning, singing our songs over and over, trying to keep from passing out. It was great. A massage train happened that day.

Q:What would you say to an incoming freshman about joining Variations? What do you look for?
A:Don’t be nervous. We are a pretty eclectic group of people, so try to pick a song that really shows off your personality. We want to know what kind of person you are when you’re not in rehearsal because we like to hang out with each other, so as clichéd as this may sound, BE YOURSELF.

Q:What made you decide to run for Variations President?
A:The former President asked me to, and I had the time on my hands. At least, I thought I had the time on my hands. But as stressful as it can be, I love it. We’re a dysfunctional family.

Q:What are your plans for after graduation?
A:Well I’m pre-law, which evidently carries the connotation of attending law school, so I guess that is happening. I want to do something between graduation and law school; I’ll probably apply for Teach for America or maybe run off to Europe and be an au pair. I’ve also thought pretty seriously about auditioning for American Idol and becoming famous, because these student loans won’t pay themselves.

Q:How will this experience help you in your future?
A:I have no idea. But I really like it, and it contributes to my overall happiness, which means I’m not super depressed, which is healthy and thus great for my future. Plus I can say on a job application that I was co-president of an a capella group and hopefully they’ll think that counts as legit leadership. But seriously, leading a group of people is probably the toughest thing I’ve had to do, and I’ve learned so much about my ability to yell. And you know, my leadership style.
