Fitness is a huge part of our culture here at Vanderbilt. Girls can often be spotted running the 3-mile loop around campus, hitting the elliptical or the treadmill at the Estrogym, or taking some insane classes at the Rec. But another large part of Vandy culture is fashion, so how do us Vandy girls blend fitness and fashion? The stereotype is Nike shorts (Norts) and a Vandy/sorority shirt, but there are definitely exceptions to the rule. Take a look at the some of the girls I found around campus, ready to work out, and see what they say about fashionable fitness!

Leah
Wearing a Vandy tee-shirt and a pair of Nike shorts, Leah says that function is more important than fashion when she works out. Her favorite thing to wear is her Vanderbilt tees.

Courtney
Courtney says she doesn’t care what she looks like when she works out, but the right clothing is important because you don’t want your clothes to get in the way of what you’re doing. Keeping this in mind, Courtney likes Nike shirts with cool sayings and, of course, Nike shorts.

Katie
Katie also thinks that it is more important to be comfortable when you work out. For her, the most important thing is a good sports bra. More importantly, she can’t live without her Nike shorts, which are both cute and comfortable.

Madeleine
Try a class at the rec! This is Madeleine, the instructor for Body Burn, and she swears by Lululemon. Her class is special because it’s high intensity with modifications, so people on different levels can work their way up. From what she has noticed, people dress up more for any aerobics class than when they work out on their own because they will be seeing so many other people.

So there you have it everyone, it looks like function comes before fashion when it comes to these Vandy girls. It’s a good thing that Nike shorts are cute, colorful, and comfortable, or we’d all look like slouches when we worked out! Just remember what Madeleine said the next time you take a class at the Rec- everyone does dress up in their nicest of workout clothes, so you might want to take a few extra seconds to throw on your Lululemon capris and a cute tank.

Stacey Oswald, originally from South Florida, came to Vanderbilt as a member of the class of 2015 and got involved with HerCampus her freshman year. She became assistant editor that year and is now the Campus Correspondent for Vanderbilt HC as a sophomore. Stacey is currently a columnist for Ask Miss A- Nashville and the life section of The Hustler. She's also very involved in her sorority, Kappa Delta, as well as Invisible Children. Outside of school and her extracurriculars, Stacey finds happiness in many sources, the most crucial being exercise and the sun. She loves to attend exercise classes and is an avid runner; she recently completed the Country Music Half Marathon. She also loves Vitamin D, especially when on the beach- though of course, she only soaks up the sun after applying SPF. A few of the things Stacey couldn't live without? Good food (especially from Sweet Cece's, Bricktops, and Samurai Sushi), great books (The Hypnotist's Love Story is a recent favorite), her family back in Florida, her wonderful boyfriend, and all of the great friends she's made at Vanderbilt.
