6 Throwback Halloween Movies You NEED To Watch This Weekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Vanderbilt chapter.

Candy and movies, need I say more? With sweater and spooky season in full swing, Halloween comes at the perfect time to curl up with a PSL and a good movie. In honor of Hocus Pocus celebrating its 25th anniversary, here are six of the best Halloween movies from way back when.

1.) It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)

No matter how many times you have seen “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” you just can’t make it through the fall without watching this classic Halloween special. It’s impossible. Hopefully this Halloween everyone makes out a little better than Charlie while trick-or-treating and doesn’t get rocks in their candy bag.

2.) Hocus Pocus (1993)

When I asked my friends what their favorite Halloween movie is, without hesitation, each responded Hocus Pocus. Disney has produced some killer Halloween movies in their day, but this one definitely takes the cake. It’s a perfect movie to get you in the Halloween mood. Especially if you watch it on October 30 (when it takes place) while hanging with friends, sipping on hot cider, and planning the last details on your costume for the next day.

3.) Casper (1995)

I mean come on, who didn’t wish they had an adorable ghost as a best friend. This movie may make you laugh and even cry more than scream. But hey, no one ever said Halloween movies need to be scary. It is a must watch movie to get you in the Halloween spirit.

4.) The Nightmare Before Christmas (1999)

Don’t let this title deceive you. This is most definitely a classic Halloween movie, though you may have the song “This is Halloween” stuck in your head until Christmas. Jack Skeleton may have gotten tired of Halloween, but I don’t think I possible could, if only October lasted 12 months…

5.) Halloweentown (1998), Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge (2001), Halloweentown High (2004), and Return to Halloweentown (2006)

I’m still waiting for my mom to let me know that I have secret witch powers and for my grandma to show up with an endless bag of goodies. It’ll happen. All four Halloweentown movies have a perfect mix of humor, sentiment, and spookiness. No Halloween marathon would be complete without these movies. Disney channel conveniently plays them on repeat throughout October, so they are hard to miss! (But I’m still salty about the Aggie actress switch in the 4th movie TBH)

6.) Twitches (2005)

Imagine after 21 years finding out you not only have a long-lost twin sister, but you are also a witch who needs to save the world. Totally relatable right? Tia and Tamera Mowry absolute slay this movie. Their on-screen chemistry as sisters is undeniable. After watching this movie, I can bet you’ll be trying to open your dresser drawers with magic to test if you’re a secret witch too.
