This Is Why You Should Be Watching Comedy Central’s Broad City

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

Perhaps one of the funniest shows on television with an 8.4 rating on IMdb and 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Broad City is a comedy series about two young best friends struggling to live in New York City. The second season recently premiered on Comedy Central on January 14, the same day it was announced that the show has been renewed for a third season.

Broad City has received critical acclaim for its originality, weirdness, and underlying feminist messages. Here are a few reasons why you should be watching Broad City Wednesday nights at 10:30pm ET on Comedy Central.

The show was created by the the main characters themselves who are actually best friends in real life. Abi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer  met while taking stand-up classes in New York.

Ilana Wexler (the fictionalized version of Glazer on the show) embodies the definition of liberation. She’s vulgar, obnoxious, inappropriate, and downright hilarious. Ilana, who smokes weed everyday, is always down to do any and everything and never fears consequence.

Speaking of Ilana, she has a “purely physical” relationship with her friend Lincoln. Although he wants more, she makes it clear that she’s only looking for sex. This relationship praises feminism and reverences sexual liberation.

The more relatable Abi Abrams (portrayed by Abi Jacobson) is four years older than Ilana and also a little more reserved. Her roommate has never been seen, yet the roomie lets her lazy boyfriend freeload at their apartment to Abi’s expense.

Oh yeah, and she hates her job. She’s practically like the rest of us.

Ilana and Abi are simply two low income college graduates trying to survive New York City on the little change they have. It’s hilarious to watch because most of us in college experience or will experience similar circumstances!

I don’t want to give too much away! Watch a few episodes on Comedy Central’s website and let us know what you think!
