VSU Alumni in Media: Dexter Davis

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

Dexter Davis graduated from VSU in December 2015 with a degree in mass media. Dexter created his own in house production company, called Scrill Media, where he offers photography, cinematography, merhchandise and consultation services. He also works at Cam Kirk Studios in Atlanta.

Dexter recently got the opportunity to film Jason Derulo’s fashion show “Level 13” for New York Fashion Week 2016. He has had many amazing opportunities since relocating to Atlanta. He has done photoshoots with Chevy Woods of Taylor Game for “Ethika,” London based clothing brands “Marbek” and “Move For Greatness,” Future’s new line with the sneaker brand Reebok, Lil Yachty, and much more. He has also done video work for Interscope Records’ artist, Dreezy.

Dexter’s passion for cameras inspired him to start his own media production company. Although he has always had this passion he didn’t always plan on pursuing a career in the media field. “When it was time for me to leave home for college, I declared my major to do something in the medical field. After a couple years of thinking I was going to be in the medical field I had a talk with myself and decided to pursue a career in something I’m most passionate about and that’s mass media.”

Once he realized mass media was the field for him, he decided to start working on projects. He credits his best friends, Joycelynn Okezie for naming the brand and Ryan Davis for managing the company. His favorite parts of his job are creating new projects, coming up with new ideas, seeing the end results of his projects and satisfying his clients and working for himself.

Things aren’t always easy, “It feels great to work in my field of choice. At times it’s hard because I’m solely working for myself through my own company. There are times when business is super busy, and then there are times when I barely have any business.” Even though things get tough, it is definietly worth it, “I remember when I first started my business, I never saw it growing this fast. It’s still in the younger stages though, and I have a lot of things to add to the brand to take it to the next level.”

Dexter has some advice for mass media majors at VSU, “Learn as much as you can learn, create as much as you can create, because in the real world the people want to see projects. That’s the only way you will get opportunity in this industry.” He also has advice for those who aspire to develop their own brand, “Study the market you are trying to get in before starting the brand. Also, invest in order to take your brand to the next level. Investing is key. Study the successful people that came before you in the market you are looking to get into, and most importantly have faith and never give up!”

You can check out Dexter’s work on his site and on Vimeo. He also plans on releasing a limited edition “Legendary” shirts soon with his manager Ryan and his business partner Taahir.
