Valentine’s Week: Campus Cutie Couple Maya & Josh

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

Meet Maya and Josh! Maya is an Early Childhood Education major who you can find spitting some of the best lines on campus in Deep Release Poetry Society, of which she is the President! Josh is an Athletic Training major who you have seen wizzing around campus on his bike. Maya and Josh have been together for two years, and the pair is one of our Campus Cutie Couples of Valentine’s Week! Thanks to Maya, we got the scoop on their relationship!

HC: How did you and Josh first meet?

Maya: Josh and I first met (officially) at CrossPointe Church at [its] college worship night. He tells the story differently than me! He says he used to see me walking on campus. I had a jogging class at 8 am in the P.E. Complex and he had a walking class at 9 am. He says he would always see me coming from that class. I was really trying to get back and not be seen! I was coming from a workout! I didn’t really think much of it or even notice him really.

Anywho, that night at the Pointe, I was leaving to go home and I heard “Goodnight Maya!”. This handsome man was waving at me, who I had not met. He told me that he had overheard me introducing myself and we talked for a few minutes. The rest is history I guess.

HC: That’s so sweet. What would you say is the foundation of your relationship?

Maya: Jesus Christ is our foundation. We could not do the ‘us’ thing wihtout our faith. Even if you love someone, there will be times when you dislike them, are annoyed by them, and you will act foolish. Then what do you turn to if you can’t turn to each other? Your faith, your God is where you turn, [and] then you turn back to each other, make up and move forward!

HC: That’s powerful. Is there any advice that you would share based on your relationship with Josh?

Maya: I tell this to every woman I meet: if a man is not up front with you – RUN. Josh was intentional with me from day one, he told me he wanted to pursue me, he took his time (he didn’t drag his feet), and he has been intentional to this day. Don’t wait around for a man to make things official. Know what you are pursuing from the BEGINNING, so you won’t be heartbroken in the end.

HC: Do you two have any special plans for Valentine’s Day?

Maya: We’re going to Atlanta. We’re having dinner downtown and then going to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens to dance!

HC: What would be featured on the EP album of “Maya + Josh” on iTunes?

Maya: Aeolus – Freelance Whales, They Can’t Take That Away From Me – Etta James & Louis Armstrong, Fall in Love – Esperanza Spalding, and Phony Ppl – I Wish I Was a Chair.
