Take a Stand: 3 Ways Take a Stand Against Domestic Violence

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior in any form of relationship that is used to control and maintain control over a person. This abuse can be physical, sexual, economic, etc. This can happen to anyone, even you! When you take a stand against domestic violence you bring awareness suffering that impacted countless people. There are people out there that need you and who are counting on you. It may not be happening to you or someone you know personally, but that does not mean it is not happening- maybe even to that friend. You can make a change in the world. Just by speaking out and letting your voice, be heard. Here are 3-ways you can stand against domestic violence.

1. Get information out-there.

You can provide information to others about domestic violence. Provide information for victims, such as where to seek help and who to call. How can you get information out there? You can have domestic violence meetings that provide information about helpful information on where they can go if they are seeking help.

2. Vow never to be an abuser.

By vowing never to be an abuser. Learn how to know what is abuse and how to avoid it. Others will learn from you. It starts with you.

3. Always report abuse.

If you see someone being abused who may be afraid to speak up, be their voice. Never be scared to get involved, but do so safely. Call the authorities. Never only watch someone get abused, they need help! Some people think by getting out, their phones, and recording that they are helping. However, recording the situation does not solve the victim’s problems at that moment. Be the person who, pick up the phone to call the police before recording.

Remember, domestic violence should never be ignored and should be taken seriously. It is always a serious matter. Domestic violence can lead to someone’s life being taken too soon. Just put yourself in someone elses shoes and think to yourself, how you would feel if this were happening to you or someone you loved dearly. Never back down to an abuser, be a voice for those who are dealing with domestic violence. You could maybe save a life. If everyone took a stand against domestic violence, we could change the world and make it a safe place for everyone. If you or someone you know is dealing with domestic violence, there are people, that can help. Contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at www.thehotline.org, or call 1.800.799.SAFE(7233).
