Life, Love & College: Signs That You’re A “Side Chick”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

We’ve all had that moment where we thought we found “the one” but it turned out that we weren’t the only one! As sad as it is, not all guys/girls are happy with one significant other and us good girls get stuck as a side chick. There are plenty of different names for a side chick (a jump off, sideline or “the other woman”), and sometimes we can be so caught up in a relationship that we can’t tell when we are being played. Here are sides that you’re a side chick. Keyword: Secret.

1) Secret to the public.

Do you ever want to go out but he always suggests that you two stay in? Is he just cheap or is he hiding something? Check the signs; he might be hiding you from the public! Never showing off his lady to the world could be a sign that he doesn’t want to get caught up, especially around campus because there is always a chance that he will run into another girl he’s dating.

2) Secret hotline.

When the two of you hang out, does he always step out to take phone calls, text with his phone turned to the side, or flip his phone over so you can’t see the screen? Odds are it isn’t business related. This is a potential sign that he has other girls contacting him constantly but he doesn’t want to get caught up while spending time with you.

3) Secret to social media.

These days, everyone has a Twitter or Instagram. Does your man post pictures of you as his Woman Crush Wednesday, or even casually mention you on twitter?  If not, that is a sign that he could be keeping you in the dark. Who doesn’t want the world to know that they are happy with their boyfriend/girlfriend?

Ladies, we can never deny our gut. So when your intuition tells you that something with your man is a little sketchy, odds are it is. There are little signs that stick out that you might want to deny but when you know… you know. Never allow yourself to be put second to someone you put first!
