Having roommates is an expected and anticipated part of going to college. Even after your freshman year, there’s a chance you’ll still have a roomie or two, or three! And unless you’re lucky enough to have your own spot right after graduation, you’ll definitely need these tips in your post-undergrad life. Every roommate situation is not the same, but keep these tips in mind if you find yourself in a rough patch.

Here are some simple ways to keep the peace:

Communication:

This is where it all starts! When you first move in your new place, have a sit down with your roomies and discuss your preferences. Make sure you talk about allll of your pet peeves and the things that annoy you the most. Avoid potential confusion by letting them know what you don’t like and then establish a middle ground.

For the long run, continue to keep communication open and try having weekly or monthly house meetings to make sure tension stays at bay.

Open-Mindedness:

Remember that everyone is different, with different upbringings and experiences than you. It’s hard, but try to be understanding! Period. :)

Interacting:

You don’t necessarily have to be best friends with your roommate, but you two do need to get along and at least be cordial. Try going out or participating in fun activities together like watching a sport, working out, or a movie night! It’s a good way for you two to get to know each other and build a bond.

Respect:

No matter what the situation, always be courteous of your roommate. Value your roommates’ things as if they were your own and always ask before using them. Don’t take advantage, because you never know when you’ll need them for something, and you WILL need your roomie for something!
