How Technology Shapes Modern Romance

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

Technology has a huge impact on this generation in so many aspects, especially romance. Technology sometimes creates a goal of romance that is hard to obtain. It’s less of a bridge that connects people and more of an obstacle that separates people.

Modern technology makes us think that we have to continue to post and show off your relationship in order for it to be considered “real.” This pressure can put stress on the relationship because you constantly have to act perfect all of the time. Also, watching someone’s relationship through a screen creates a fantasy of what a perfect relationship should look like, even though there’s no such thing as a perfect relationship.

Technology also allows others to meet many different people online through online dating. Instead of dating in the small fish bowl of people you know, online dating creates a bridge of communication from all over the world. But because everything is online, people are more vulnerable to dangerous situations. For example, you never know if who you’re meeting up with is who they say they are.

Overall technology either help create love or create stress on a relationship. No matter what, love who you want and be safe.

Valdosta '25

Hey, my name is Emily Harmon. I’m currently a freshman at Valdosta State University, and I am majoring in Early Education. I am from a small town in Georgia, but I have moved around a lot due to being in a military family. I love plants, traveling, hanging out with friends, reading, and writing. As a young queer woman, I want to inspire and encourage others to learn to love themselves and to be who they are.
