Campus Curl Chronicles: Joslin Buckner ’16

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

Name: Joslin Buckner

Classification: Junior

Major: Pre-nursing

HC: How long have you been natural?

JB: Well I stopped getting relaxers when I was in the 11th grade but I didn’t cut all of the relaxed ends off until the summer before my freshman year of college. So I have been completely natural for 3 years, going on 4.

HC: How would you describe your hair texture?

JB: I have a lot of different hair textures. In the back I have a much looser curl pattern (3c) than I do in the front and the crown of my head which is more like a 4a. I also have random sections of my hair that don’t have much of a curl (4c).

HC: What is your favorite or most convenient hairstyle?

JB: Even though you might see me with a puff, most of the time because it’s most convenient, my favorite style would have to be a twist out.

HC: Name some of your staple products. Shampoo, conditioner (deep), leave-in, etc…

JB: I am what you call a product junkie because I never stick to one product; I am always trying something new. The Curls Unleashed brand is one brand that I do continue to buy. I love all of their products, especially their curl boosting jelly. AS I AM is also a good brand; they have a really good deep/leave-in conditioner.

HC: What is a wash day like for you?

JB: A wash day for me is literally an all-day process.

HC: What are some of the most common problems you face when styling your hair? How do you combat these issues?

JB: The most common problem that I have when styling my hair is when my hair starts to dry and my curls start to coil up really tight after I have detangled my hair. I try to keep a spray bottle handy but it is still one of my biggest struggles due to my hair type.

HC: What are two dos and don’ts when it comes to your hair?

JB: Do: Moisturize; dry hair is not cute!

Do: Deep condition.

Don’t: Let random people experiment with your hair. If you want to try something new, like color, always go to a professional.

Don’t: Get caught up in someone else’s hair type or length. It will only depress you about your own hair.

HC: Is there anything you want to try on your hair that is out of your comfort zone?

JB: To be honest, I have pretty much tried everything on my hair. I am not afraid to step out of my comfort zone.

HC: How does your hair make you feel?

JB: My hair makes me feel different. Although there are many naturals out here, my hair is MY hair and no one else’s hair is like mine.

HC: Any words of advice to ladies with the same hair type as you?

JB: When it comes to natural hair, you have to do what is best for YOUR hair. What works for me may not work for you so never be afraid to try different things and step outside of your comfort zone. Love your hair!
