Campus Curl Chronicles: Bethany Armstead

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

Name: Bethany Armstead

Classification: Junior

Major: Psychology

HC: How long have you been natural?

BA: I started transitioning in 2011, and I have been completely natural since 2012.

HC: How would you describe your hair texture?

BA: it’s a mixture of 3c and 4a hair. The back is way curlier than the front is!

HC: What is your favorite or most convenient hair style?

BA: I love braid outs! They give me so much life, they are time consuming but the end results are great. Those and puffs.

HC: Name some of your staple products. Shampoo, conditioner (deep), leave-in, etc…

BA: right now I’m in a test and trail era, I’m using cream of nature’s product line, for deep conditioning I use Shea Moistures coconut and hibiscus conditioner.

HC: What is a wash day like for you?

BA: Hectic! If someone else is washing my hair, it’s really enjoyable if I am its really time consuming. I don’t get to enjoy the relaxation because of the detangling and making sure every part of your hair is clean!

HC: What are some of the most common problems you face when styling your hair? How do you combat these issues?

BA: A lot of frizz, it just makes me want to cut my hair off! It either makes or breaks your hair style to me, although some people enjoy it because of their curl pattern. In order to combat it I coat my hair with oils and make sure it’s moisturized.

HC: What are two do’s and don’ts when it comes to your hair?

BA:

Do: Love your hair, as if you love yourself

Don’t: Do your hair in a style if you’re rushed, angry or frustrated

Do: Keep your hair moisturized!

Don’t: Hate your hair because someone has a different curl pattern than you

HC: Is there anything you want to try on your hair that is out of your comfort zone?

BA: I’ve been contemplating cutting it all off, because I feel like I started too late in the game to start taking care of my hair and by now I have different curl patterns and I just want a fresh start!

HC: How does your hair make you feel?

BA: Like I can just conquer the world. I feel so beautiful when my hair is popping [laughs], but to the same extent when it’s not popping I feel the complete opposite like “ugh!”

HC: Any words of advice to ladies with the same hair type as you?

BA:Embrace your natural self, all around. Don’t rely heavily on things that have been created to hide your hair. Embrace your texture, your afro even if you have one!
