Campus Celebrity Roxi Barkley ’17

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

There is no way you don’t know who Roxi Barkley is. From being in your Top 5 Favorite RAs or catching her in Nevins on the way to math class, you can’t help but love this motivated and hard working individual! If somehow you don’t know Roxi, keep reading and meet this great lady!

Name: Roxi Barkley

Major/Minor: Applied Mathmatics/Psychology

Hometown: Lithia Springs, Georgia

VSU Classification: Junior

On Campus Involvement: Resident Assistant in Patterson Hall, VSU Orientation Leader, and University Ambassador

Dogs or Cats?: Cats

Zodiac Sign: Scorpio

HC: Hi Roxi! Talk to us about why you chose to attend VSU.

Roxi: When I first started thinking about applying to colleges, I had it in my mind that I wanted to be a Psychology major, which was my main reason for applying here. Now, I’m a completely different major and there’s no place I’d rather be.

HC: Well now that you’re a math major, have you figured out what you want to do after life at VSU?

Roxi: I plan on continuing at VSU for a Master’s degree in Higher Education, but the ultimate goal is to instill a love for learning and education in students through teaching math at a high school level, and then eventually college.

HC: It looks like your time at VSU will be a bit extended then. Have there been any moments here that caused you to realize that you had a purpose to impact others?

Roxi: Every moment I spent in Lowndes Hall [as a Resident Assistant] last year solidified that I am exactly where I’m supposed to be in my life. The amount of joy and support I receive from working with my staff and my residents is something I’ll never be able to achieve doing anything else.

HC: Does the feeling that your job on campus gives you play any part into what you’re passionate about in life?

Roxi: I’m passionate about kindness. I’m passionate about people. I’m very passionate about being kind to people. I’ve discovered through working in student affairs that genuine interactions with people bring so much joy and purpose to my life. It’s so rewarding to foster relationships simply by having good intentions through every action and conversation you have with another person.

HC: That’s great Roxi. It sounds like you were implementing this into your life far before your time at VSU. What did you want to be when you grew up as a kid? How do you feel about what you have accomplished thus far in life?

Roxi: Everything. I wanted to be a vet, a dancer, a softball player, the president, a kindergarten teacher…I was ambitious beyond my years. [For my life,] I’m just getting started. I feel like I’ve accomplished more than I ever imagined that I would at this point in my life, as far as my development as a leader, student, and person. I feel like my biggest accomplishment is the impact I’ve been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to make on incoming students through orientation and working in Housing. Being remembered by such wonderful humans is the most humbling experience.

HC: From your time working with students new to campus, what is the best advice you can share with them?

Roxi: Be completely willing to get lost in the college experience. Prepare to make mistakes and know that you can fix them. You’re going to meet some of the best people you’ll be fortunate to know on this campus. You’re going to accomplish more than you ever though possible in such a short amount of time.

HC: Well before we leave today, overwhelmed from your wisdom and grace, let’s ask some fun questions! What was your favorite TV show growing up?

Roxi: Arthur was my home boy. He taught me how to spell aardvark and about library cards. That show defined my childhood.

HC: What are some of your favorite things to do?

Roxi: I really enjoy watching documentaries with a cup of coffee on lazy days. I also really love going out to eat and trying new foods, interacting with cute, fuzzy animals, and folding clean laundry.

HC: Final question. What three words would sum up your time here at VSU?

Roxi: Chubby’s wings rule.

I hope you have had fun meeting Roxi and getting to know more about her fun self! If you want to keep up with her on the regular, follow her on Instagram & Twitter at @rbrkly. HCXO!
