Fun Fact: Caroline started singing before she started talking!

HC: Hey Caroline! As our Campus Celebrity, let’s first kick this interview off by asking you a question celebrities are asked so often…who or what inspires you the most?

Caroline: My family keeps me inspired constantly. I am very fortunate to have two parents who are still married and very much in love. They inspire me to balance hard work and fun, to be kind to others, and to never lose sight of who I am. I also have an extraordinarily talented older brother to look up to. He has played such an integral role in my becoming who I am. He inspires me with his ability to make anyone feel instantly connected to him, his desire for learning new things, and his unparalleled way with words.

HC: Wow. It is very obvious what an awesome support group you have had growing up. With that kind of supportive background, it seems appropriate to ask, what did you want to grow up and be when you were little?

Caroline: I found a worksheet from my kindergarten once that asked this same question, and my response was “A Midwife, just like my mommy.” At the time I had absolutely no idea what the job entailed. I just knew my mother was my hero and I wanted the cape passed down to me. Very soon after learning what a Midwife actually did I changed my mind. Mad props to my mom though!

HC: Again…wow. You appear to have set the bar high for yourself even at such a young age. How do you stay motivated to be successful in what you do?

Caroline: I am a big advocate for surrounding yourself with people who will keep you motivated and with a fresh perspective. Unfortunately I can’t have my wonderful friends around me all the time so I place motivational quotes all around me. Looking down at my notebook, lock screen on my phone, or even my shower curtain at home, and seeing something that reminds me to move forward and be better keeps me in check when I’m feeling unmotivated.

HC: With that motivation all around you constantly, it seems like you are Super Woman! Does your motivation channel into anything that you are passionate about?

Caroline: I am very passionate about love. Sounds a little cliché, but there is nothing I have more passion for than seeing people interact with kindness and compassion. Every other passion I have (singing, painting, writing, etc) stems from my love of love. There are so many types of love that can be felt and I find it interesting to consider and learn about them all.

HC: That is not a cliché at all! Since you mentioned your other passions, what are some of your favorite things to do?

Caroline: I love to sing and write music, spending quality time with my friends, writing in my journal, and taking a good book to Grassroots downtown and enjoying a cup of coffee. Going to the movies is my favorite stress reliever. I enjoy working at Lowndes Hall and seeing the community and relationships that are built during my shifts always warms my heart. I also love going to see live music (locally, in Atlanta or in Gainesville usually) or taking a spontaneous trip to Tallahassee with friends. Cooking for people has become my new favorite thing to do.

HC: It sounds like you live a well balanced life! Equal parts fun and friends and school and work! Speaking of school, when you came to VSU, what were you thinking?

Caroline: Initially I chose VSU because my brother went here and had such a wonderful experience. I honestly came here with every intention of transferring after my first year, but I fell in love with the community. Staying here is one of the best decisions I have ever made.

HC: VSU should really hire you as a spokesmodel! We did see you in the newest “VSYou” video that the University released! Congratuations on your part in that! You are a senior, and approaching graduation, so here comes the “big” question…what legacy and/or impact do you hope to leave at VSU from your time here?

Caroline: I hope after my time at VSU comes to an end people remember me as the woman who spread laughter, formed meaningful relationships, and fought for acceptance at every turn. I have loved every minute I have spent as this university, and looking back at my time here I feel that it has loved me back.

HC: We would love to know what your plans are once you leave VSU. Where will you be? What will you be doing?

Caroline: I am currently planning to apply for VSU’s graduate program. The plan is to obtain a Grad Assistantship with a Higher Education focus, but get my Master’s Degree in Communication. Plans are always changing, but hopefully the stars will align and I’ll be able to spend another two years at this wonderful university.

HC: We hope the stars align for you too! Our fingers are crossed! As much as we hate to end this amazing interview, we have to. For our last question, we wanted to ask you Caroline what advice you would give to incoming students?

Caroline: Have an open mind. Leaving home and being submerged in a new place is such a humbling and glorious experience if you allow it to be. Know that you will meet people that are so wonderfully different from who you are. Don’t let that scare you. Embrace it.

As a writer, this has been one of my favorite interviews to date! If you want to catch more of Caroline’s funny side or see more of her roadtrips on Instagram, follow her at @carolinedavis13.
