To Brazilian or Not To Brazilian? That is the Question.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

You know you’ve been thinking about it. You know you’ve heard that a lot of people are doing it. But is it for you?

Calm down…I’m talking about Brazilian waxes, people!

Brazilian waxes are literally the best things since sliced bread. “Is it really that great?” you may ask. They are amazing! If you’ve been thinking about getting one but are too afraid, it’s okay. The thought of them can be very scary. And I’m not going to lie—they can be pretty painful. But trust me, they are so, so worth it.

One of the best things about deciding to get a Brazilian wax is that you can cut out shaving…well, at least on that part of your body, anyway. What a Brazilian wax does is make your hair grow back at a slower rate and it grows back much finer. Therefore, you can go anywhere from four to six weeks without having to get another wax. However, I strongly advise against waiting too long between visits. Everyone’s hair grows at a different rate, so six weeks might be the perfect length for one person to go back, whereas six weeks might be completely out of control for the next person. And trust me, you don’t want to let you hair get too long before going back for another wax. The longer your hair gets, the more painful it’s going to be when you get waxed.

But let’s go into detail about what the actual wax is like. Now, I’m sure every waxing salon does things a little differently, but I’ve only been to Stripped Waxing Salon here in Valdosta. First off, it does help a teeny tiny bit to take some type of pain medicine about thirty minutes to an hour before your appointment. This can help ease the pain a little; not a lot, but a little. No exaggeration at all, your first time it really will feel like that scene from The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

The overall process takes only about 15 minutes. The 15 minutes feels a lot longer the first time than it does the second time you go. When I go, my “waxer” (if that’s what you call the person who performs the wax) usually likes to start a conversation to take my mind off of the fact that the wax is being done. I’ll admit that the first time, it didn’t do much help but it turned out to be very comforting the second time.

At first glance, the wax can look really strange. It’s blue and really thick. The wax can feel pretty hot when it first touches your skin, but you’ll start to get used to it after a while. Then your waxer will put narrow strips of the wax on your hair, let it harden for about fifteen seconds, then rip it off using another hardened piece of wax.

Afterward, you may feel a little sore, but you’ll feel as smooth as a baby’s butt! If you go to Stripped Waxing Salon, you even get to pick out a pair of panties or an exfoliating glove after your visit. Whether you choose to get it from the salon or from any store, it’s good to get an exfoliating glove because it prevents in grown hairs. And a last word of advice—if you decided that you’re going to continuously get Brazilian waxes, DO NOT shave in between waxes! The next time you go back to get waxed again after shaving, it’ll be like getting your first wax all over again.

Good luck and happy waxing!
