What Is It?
For the month of April, Sexual Assault Awareness is increased among media outlets. This is to raise awareness towards sexual assault and the negative impacts that follow it. Sexual Assault includes sexual harassment, assault, and abuse both physically and through online sources.
During the 1940s and 1950s, social change and equality movements gained popularity in the United States. It was during these times that, although limited, sexual assault preventive advocates spoke up about the realities of sexual assault. Again during the 1970s, sexual assault awareness gained popularity with support from survivors. And in 1971, the first rape crisis center was founded in San Francisco, California.
Who Can It Happen To?
Anyone of any race, gender, or sexuality can be sexually assaulted. Furthermore, sexual assault does not solely happen through those unknown. Those who are in toxic relationships can also be sexually assaulted, and they may not even know that they are victims of it.
“Consent” is a major word taught to the generations of today about sexual assault prevention, especially to those entering college. One will learn to always, always, ask for permission no matter how small it may seem. “May I hold your hand? May I kiss you?” Furthermore, one learns that “no, means no.” If someone does not clearly state that they are okay with your actions, then it is not okay by any means for you to continue them.
How Can I Help?
The easiest and simplest way to share your support for Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention is to educate yourself and others about it. Be a part of the community that recognizes the issues of sexual assault in the world, and be the person that chooses to stand with the survivors against it.
Believe the survivors when they share their stories, not blame them.
Ask for consent in your own life, and respect the boundaries of yourself and others.
Spread awareness to the communities around you because you can help change the world.
