Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

Alzheimer is the progressive mental deterioration of the brain. It is the main cause of Dementia which is a chronic disorder of the mental processes caused by brain disease or injury and marked by memory disorders, personality changes, and impaired reasoning. This is a horrifying disease to watch a loved one go through. This is a disease that my grandmother fought for a few years, but in July of this year the disease won and the battle ended. November is the designated month that we try to bring awareness to this disease, but we all need to remember that it is not the only month that we have to bring awareness. Awareness can be brought 365 days out of the year. Not just in November.

Alzheimer’s is not just a disease that one person struggles with, but it is a disease that the entire family is fighting together.  Watching a loved one go through this is heartbreaking, but you just learn to adapt and love them regardless. Yes, many times you will find yourself having to repeat things to them several times, watch them a little more closely to make sure they don’t wander into harm’s way, but that is what you do for family. I can’t tell you how much I wish my granny was back here with me.

Wear purple to show some awareness, go volunteer at a nursing home with Alzheimer patients, bring awareness in some form or fashion, or you can just easily pass this article on.
