4 Books Every Modern Day Feminist Should Read

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

For some of us, we’re getting back into the groove of being in school, while others are just entering school wide-eyed, anxious to see what college has to offer. Although I’ve only been in college for a year, it has taught me many lessons. One of the most important would be: Stay true to yourself! One value I’ve always held close was to embrace my femininity and always stand for the equality of women. For those who may also find themselves to be a self-proclaimed feminist, or just interested in learning more about feminism, here are a few books to help guide your way through college…

1. #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amaruso (May 6, 2014)

Amaruso, CEO of Nasty Gal (a $100-million plus online fashion retailer), tells us how she accomplished going from being a teenage hitchhiker to achieving the success. This book not only tells her story of doing so, but also how other women may want to follow in her footsteps by creating their own way to success.

2. Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay (August 5, 2014)

Haven’t read this yet? You’re missing out! In this bestseller, Gay provides insightful and inspiring information from her perspective of what feminism means today and how we can all include it in our lives. In this read, she takes us on a ride of how feminism culture has shifted throughout the years. But most importantly she explains that what matters most is staying true ourselves!

3. Full Frontal Feminism: A Young Woman’s Guide to Why Feminism Matters, by Jessica Valenti (updated second edition, July 22, 2014)

This update from the original book Full Frontal Feminism (2007), includes Valenti addressing cultural changes over the last 7 years, including topics such as pop culture, reproductive rights, sex and violence.

4. Men Explain Things To Me by Rebecca Solnit (May 20, 2014)

In this comic, Solnit talks about what often goes wrong in conversations about men and women. She also talks about why men assume they know more than women and that women know nothing at all. I highly recommend reading this book!
