How to: Budget Like a Pro

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UWM chapter.

Saving money is not easy. Some people are wired to spend! Other people can’t help but be frugal. It’s all how we view the concept of money and time. However, we all definitely have our splurges. For example, I love eating healthy/more expensive food. I’ll go to the grocery store and splurge on not-so-cheap kombucha or organic kale. Some of my friends buy new clothes every single week!

Whether you work hard for your money or you don’t, it’s always good to save up. Here are some of my budget tips.

1. Download a budget app that allows you to track your income and expenses. There’s tons of them on the app store.

2. Start allocating more of your paycheck into your savings account.

3. Take out cash at the beginning of the week and tell yourself that’s how much you have to live off of during the week.

4. Limit your eating out and drinks throughout the week.

5. Set a specific amount you’re allowed to spend on your “splurges” per month.

6. Do not “reward” yourself for not spending anything by going out and spending.

7. Start meal prepping to cut down cost of groceries/fast food.

8. Keep a journal of what you did that day so you can start to see how your living habits affect your spending habits.

Saving is hard, but if you save up enough you can go on those awesome vacations or buy that dress that you’ve always wanted. Think about what is important in the long run and you can achieve your saving goals!
