This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UWM chapter.
Meet, Jenna Towers, the Marketing and PR coordinator for our Her Campus chapter. Jenna is studying Human Resource Management and Communication here at UWM and currently holds a internship at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Not only has Jenna been heavily involved on campus, but studied abroad in Syndey, Australia!
For the people looking to study abroad, what advice would you give?
Don’t worry about the cost or your friends back home, just do it. It’s a once in a lifetime experience that changed who I was for the better. It gives you a perspective of the world that textbooks and your hometowns/countries can’t. When you are there, go to the bar, take that trip, do the spontaneous thing that you normally wouldn’t do.
For the people who don’t know, what’s Human Resources? And what type of things do you do?
HR is the support system of organizations. We do a variety of things, dependent on the organization. We help write policies, inform people on the policies, deal with Employee Relations (sexual harassment claims, hostile work environment, poor work quality, conflict management). We recruit and interview for positions, answer employees questions relating to benefits. Compile benefits plans and negotiate with major benefit suppliers for the best deal and more. Those are just a few things that we do.
What tips would you give to someone actively looking for an internship?
To go to UWM Career Services. They will help you tailor your resume, find the best internship, and do mock interviews with you in order to get the job.
Your involved with a couple organizations on campus, how do you stay sane?
I try to take time to myself. Between working 20 hours a week, 18 credits, and two students orgs there isn’t much time. I read a book each night before I go to bed or try to go for walks/yoga everyday.
What would you tell your freshman/sophomore self?
To not let the past change your future.
