8 Movies on Netflix to Watch While You’re Self Quarantining

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UWindsor chapter.

1.  Someone Great – If you’re into rom-coms, this is a movie you have to watch! It’s not your typical romantic comedy; in fact it’s actually about a breakup. The film will take you on an emotional rollercoaster as you watch Jenny fall in and out of love. You also get to see her fall in love with herself and gain her independence. It’s a snuggle-up-in-the-dark-with-a-ton-of-blankets type of movie that will have you laughing and crying and even jamming out to a Lizzo track!

2.  Christopher Robin – While I watched this movie in theatres instead of on Netflix I still 100% recommend it (I’m a little biased because I love Winnie the Pooh, and Ewan McGregor if I’m being honest) Christoper Robin has grown up, but Pooh and the gang show up to bring back his inner child! It’s that kind of heart-warming feel-good film that you can watch by yourself or with your family.

3.  Always Be My Maybe – Yet another rom-com (I’m just a sucker for love stories). This movie’s great for a number of reasons.  For starters, it’s not structured around a white couple but an Asian couple instead. Also, the couple are more like frenemies instead of just over-the-top romantic partners all the time, and I think it highlights reality as much as a Hollywood movie can. While the plot line is safe and predictable, I think that’s what makes it so satisfying because you get the happy ending you came for!

4.  Wine Country – While this movie is about a group of friends who are in their 50s going on a vacation together, it’s relatable for any age group. My friends and I got together to watch this for a movie night, and it was fantastic! Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph star in it, and if you know what any of their movies are like, this one is no different. It’s a hilarious and heart-warming movie, and even if you can’t sit with your friends while you hunker down in your room, it’s still a wonderful feel-good film.

5.  Happy Death Day – If you like a little bit of gory comedy, this movie is a great one. Originally, I thought it was meant to be scarier just from going off of the trailer, but I actually laughed a lot. It’s definitely a twisted humor kind of funny, but if that’s your jam then check this movie out.

6.  Unicorn store – If you like weird and confusing films, Unicorn Store is just for you! I originally watched it without reading any reviews about it, so I had no idea what I was in for. All I knew was that it’s Brie Larson’s directorial debut, and she also stars in it as well. By the end of it you’ll be wondering what was real and what was fake as it plays heavily on the imagination of a young child. The best way I can describe it is that it’s unpredictable and unlike anything I’ve ever watched before. If you’re looking for a film that will make you question life itself, I highly recommend this one.

7.  Iliza Unveiled – If you’re NOT into anything that might hurt your brain and are just looking for mindless humor to brighten your day, Iliza Schlesinger has a few comedy series out on Netflix that are sure to make you laugh. I recently saw her show at Caesars Windsor and then spent the next day binging all her specials and I have zero regrets about it. Her acts are so entertaining, you’ll hardly realize you spent over an hour just watching one special. And with 5 separate shows, that’s like 6 hours of uninterrupted laughter that is so needed during an isolation period.

8.  I’m gonna wrap this list off with a classic. Lord of the Rings. Of course, this is a trilogy so it’s gonna take you one or two days to watch them all, but hey you’ve got the time anyway, right? I think it’s self explanatory to all my fantasy lovers on why this should be a part of your quarantine binge list, and if you haven’t watched them ever before then what are you waiting for? Now’s the time!
