The 10 Types of People who Watch the Super Bowl

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UWindsor chapter.

The Super Bowl is the most watched event on television in North America.  It seems to attract everyone, including the lovers and haters of the game, and for many different reasons. Here are the ten types of people who watch the Super Bowl. Will you be any of one these while watching the Super Bowl on February 7th?

1. The average football fan

This would be the person who watches football, has a favourite team (who probably didn’t make the Super Bowl, especially if that team is the Detroit Lions), and has basic knowledge about football. This person is watching the super bowl because they enjoy the game and they probably picked a team they are rooting for.

2. The fan whose team made the Super Bowl

Only two teams make the Super Bowl each year. This year it is the Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos. If you are a fan of one of these two teams you are most likely ecstatic. These people watch the game, hoping and praying that their team wins, because if they do, they have bragging rights that their team is the best for the rest of the year.

3. The commercial-lover

If you’ve ever watched the Super Bowl, you know that  companies use this time to premier a lot of their new advertisements. A lot of people are very interested in watching these cute, funny, and entertaining ads that instead of just watching them on YouTube the next day, they watch a whole sports game just for the commercials.

4. The people just there for the halftime show

Super Bowls are also known to have very popular artists perform at the halftime show. Last year it was Katy Perry and this year it will be Coldplay. There are some people who just turn on their TV for the halftime show and some who agree to tag along to a Super Bowl party knowing that the one part that will interest them is the halftime show. These people often have no interest in sports; they just want to watch a good concert.

5. The sport-hater

There’s always that one person that has no business watching the Super Bowl. They don’t want to be there and no one else wants them there because they can be negative about the sport, the teams, and the current game. Tip: if you don’t like it, don’t watch it.

6. The eater

Super Bowl parties are always stocked full of food. Pizza, chicken wings, nachos, dips, chips, etc. if you love this kind of food you may show up to a Super Bowl party for just that reason. At least the food will keep you entertained even if the game does not.

7. The commentator

This is the person who may or may not know anything about Football but will try their best to give everyone the play-by-play. If you’re too busy eating to look at the screen, at least this person will tell you who passed to who and if the quarterback was just sacked. This person may become slightly annoying, but hey, at least they’re into the game!

8. The beer-lover

Of course, football – and especially the Super Bowl – is an excuse to sit around at a friend’s house and drink beer. You may love football, you may not care, but you’re here for the beer and that’s all that matters.

9. The fair-weather fan

There are always multiple people that never watch a regular season football game, and then suddenly right after the Super Bowl is done, they’ve always been a die-hard Denver Bronco’s fan (if Denver won). They may even switch teams halfway through the game, usually picking the favourite at the beginning and then changing to whoever is winning.

10. The social media-posters

Even if you’ve never watched the Super Bowl, I’m sure you’ve seen plenty of facebook and twitter posts about it. Football lovers and haters alike enjoy posting before, during, and after the game. Posts will range from “I knew my team would win” to “Go Carolina Panthers!” to “I’m so glad the Patriots didn’t make the Super Bowl this year.” And of course: “Would everyone stop posting about the Super Bowl?”
