5 Ways to Stay True to Yourself in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UWG chapter.

College. It’s like a whole new world. There’s this new freedom to do whatever you want, whenever you want, and while this may seem like “the life” at first, some people come to college and eventually, they lose themselves. Now, I don’t know about you, but that is NOT “goals” to me. If you feel the same way, then read on for 5 ways to stay true to yourself in college.

1) Don’t Forget Where You Came From:

Remember all the rules your parents gave you when you were younger? You know, put your plate in the sink, don’t be mean to others, and respect people? Remember those rules when you go off to college. Don’t try to be like the “cool kids” who talk down on people and act like they forgot everything they were taught. Don’t forget home training! #charitybeginsathome

2. Choose Your Friends Wisely:

Friends can truly make or break you. I know, I know, you’ll wanna be friends with everyone you meet during the first few weeks of college. That’s not a bad thing, but when you start to see that your values don’t line up with theirs, it’s time to find some new friends.

3. Set Goals For Yourself:

Setting goals for yourself is one of the best things you can do in order to set your standards. Goal-setting can make the difference between passing a class and failing it, which in turn, can determine a lot of other things.

4. Don’t Give Up

You know those goals you set for yourself in the last step? Yeah, they’re most likely not going to be easy to reach. I have to be honest! You’ll want to give up. You’ll want to go with the wrong crowd because you’re unsure of yourself. But you can’t give up. You can’t possibly do that to yourself.

5. Love Yourself:

Don’t let what others think or say get to you. You are so valued and treasured, and regardless of whether or not you’ve been told that, it’s very true. Go off to college with that mindset, and no one will be able to walk all over you.

I hope that whether you’re just entering college or you’re in your senior year, that you’ll stay true to yourself in college and always!
