SGA Vice President: Yasmin Hernandez

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UWF chapter.

Major: Marine Biology and Environmental Science

Hometown: Fort Walton Beach, FL

Classification: Senior

Yasmin Hernandez is making waves on campus. With her time split between attending classes, managing Homecoming 2017 as the Executive Director, and serving as Vice President of Student Government she’s always on the run making plans to improve campus and the lives of fellow students. Those who know Yasmin see the dedication she puts into every detail of her work. She manages to accomplish tasks while motivating her team with a bright smile and enthusiasm for a job well done. We decided we’d ask her about her time at UWF and her advice for students who want to get involved on campus, too.

Her Campus UWF: What organizations have you been a part of since coming to UWF?

Yasmin Hernandez: I have been a part of multiple organizations in my time here at UWF such as Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, SGA, Dance Marathon, Scuba Club, Order of Omega, and just recently Phi Alpha Delta.  I have also been an orientation leader.

HCUWF: Of those organizations, which one was the most meaningful to you? Why?

YH: Of all the organizations, two have been the most meaningful to me, and those two have been my sorority and SGA. Both of these have provided me with countless memories and have helped me to develop personally and as a leader. My journey started with ADPI and because of my sisters seeing something more than I saw in myself I am where I am today. The Student Government Association has allowed me to share my passion and love for this university with other students and has allowed me to grow professionally and advocate on behalf of our students at a local and state level, which has been a tremendous opportunity.

HCUWF: What got you interested in joining SGA?

YH: What got me interested in SGA was that I wanted to be able to assure that students’ voices were heard. I loved how members of SGA carried themselves and [I] wanted to challenge myself and my leadership abilities in a more formal, business setting, so that I could have a greater impact and inspire other students.

HCUWF: What are you looking forward to most as Student Body Vice President?

YH: I am most looking forward to making a huge difference on this campus and following through with the platform items President Patel and I have come up with. This is the 50th anniversary and we wish to have 50 projects completed by the end of our term. I am also excited to work on our major platform items such as mental health awareness, campus safety, and overall student experience this year. We have some incredible things coming to UWF this upcoming semester and I can’t wait for our students to benefit from the programs our team has worked so hard on.

HCUWF: What are your career goals?

YH: My career goals are to finish my undergrad and from there attend law school. I want to own my own law firm one day.

HCUWF: What is your favorite quote?

YH: My favorite quote is a simple one, but I have always loved it. “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not,” from Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

HCUWF: What advice would you give to incoming Argonauts?

YH: The advice I would give incoming Argonauts is to get involved. I heard this a lot during my freshman orientation but it is only in looking back on my experience that I have found that getting involved truly shaped and changed my experience. I am a much more confident, well-spoken person thanks to my involvement. And not only that, but I have made so many more memories than I could have ever imagined because of it. Definitely get involved, you won’t regret it!
