Women’s Track and Field Team Making Strides

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

It’s been a rather exciting year for the Women’s Track and Field Team here at Stout, and quite the year for breaking school records. During the indoor season, Women’s Track and Field athletes broke records for the 4×200 meter relay (Laurisa Titterud, Meagan Ward, Jada Hamilton, Alex Titterud), 400 meter dash (L. Titterud), and the distance medley relay (Hamilton, L. Titterud, Kathleen Thorn, Jordan Kelch). The 4×400 meter relay team (Molly Brion, A. Titterud, L. Titterud, Hamilton) also made history this year as they were the first team to take first in this event. Another highlight was that the women’s team placed fourth out of nine in the conference meet. This was the best finish the women’s team has had since the year 2005.

It looks like the outdoor season for the women’s team will also be one full of breaking school records. In addition to Laurisa Titterud’s collection of school records in the 4×200 meter relay, and 400 meter dash, Titterud broke the school record for the 800 meter run, as well, this past weekend at UW-Platteville. The previous school record was one from 1998- that’s seventeen years. Wow!

The women broke yet another record on Saturday in the 4×100 meter relay team. The team finished third overall, but beat the previous record from 1994 by half of a second- which doesn’t seem like that long, but in such a relay where hand-offs play a huge role, it is. Members of the team include Jada Hamilton, Kate Johnson, Alex Titterud, and Cheyenne Gray.

In addition to the 4×100 meter relay, Hamilton and Gray took second in the 400 meter dash and seventh in the 100-hurdles, respectively. Other top finishers included Lydia Meier (third, hammer throw), Kathleen Thorn (sixth, 5000-meter), Emma Sapiro (seventh, 400-meter hurdles), and Michelle Brandt (eighth, shot put).

In comparison to previous strong seasons, the women’s track and field team is truly having a standout season this year. With many strong finishers in a variety of events, the women’s track and field’s outdoor season is only going to get better. Be sure to pay attention for further recaps- as I expect big things from them this season!
