Popular Holiday Opinions: The College Girl’s Winter Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

If you see the month of freedom stretched out beautifully in the distance, but don’t know what to do with it, you’ve come to the right place. To find inspiration for your break and to spread holiday spirit, I interviewed four college women to find out some popular holiday and winter break activities.

What is the one Christmas movie you have to watch every year?

Kelly: Santa Claus is Coming to Town.

Caylin: Elf

Megan: The Santa Claus (first one)

Riley: It’s a Wonderful Life

Tell me how you feel about snow.

Kelly: “Let it go.”

Caylin: “I think it’s necessary for a white Christmas… Another part of my brain is going, fluffy!”

Megan: “I’m just thinking about SpongeBob, because I wish to rule the frozen ice droplets falling from the sky.”

Riley: “In a perfect world, snow would be around all December and January, then light snow in February, all of it melting in March.”

Is there one present that stands out in your mind as being the best present ever?

Kelly: “Surprise mittens. I was a freshman in college and they stand out because they were a true surprise; normally you know what you’re getting.”

Caylin: “I really wanted this light-up Pikachu when I was little and when I got it I would drive it around on my Barbie car.”

Megan: “I got a baby doll when I was very small and I named it Megan cause that was the only thing I could think of. And, boy, did I love that doll forever. It looks ugly now, its hair is matted and it’s just dirty and awful.”

Riley: “My uncle made a movie of my confirmation and it was a really sweet compilation of all my family. I got it my freshman year of high school.”

What is your favorite holiday tradition?

Kelly: “My family gathers and it’s really nice; even the ones who refuse to speak to each other gather at Christmas.”

Caylin: “Hanging around on Christmas morning in pajamas, drinking coffee, opening presents, listening to Christmas music.”

Megan: She puzzled and puzzled ’til her puzzler was sore, then said, “I can’t puzzle anymore!”

Riley: “We always have a fire on Christmas Eve, drink hot apple cider, and open presents when we get back from church.”

What’s your favorite holiday food?

Kelly: “Homemade Irish cream.”

Caylin: “Peppermint hot chocolate.”

Megan: “There’s too many options: lefse, pistachio salad, Christmas cookies…”

Riley: “Stuffing. It’s always the stuffing… unless it’s the green bean casserole.”

What are you most looking forward to doing over winter break?

Kelly: “Just seeing my family again.”

Caylin: “Everything: sleep, not having to do homework, being home.”

Megan: “Sleeping.”

Riley: “Eating really good food without putting in much effort to get it.”

What is the most underrated thing to do over winter break?

Kelly: Just as Megan had a few questions before, Kelly puzzled ’til she said, “I shall puzzle no more.”

Caylin: “Building snow forts.’

Megan: “Playing in the snow, especially making snowmen, cross-country skiing, and ice-fishing.”

Riley: “Binge-watching TV shows I’ve fallen behind on.”
