Packing For A Trip: Without The Struggle

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

As if it’s not hard enough to pick out an outfit for one day, planning a vacation wardrobe can seem impossible. This is especially true when there’s a weight limit on luggage. Usually, you want to pack the basics for every weather condition as well as something dressy and stylish for nights out. However, by the time you’re done packing, your whole closet ends up in the suitcase. How do you narrow it down to the best choices?

Mix, match, layer and accessorize!

Basics such as t-shirts and jeans are essential for everyday use. A zip up or jean jacket brings warmth when the sun sets. The two combined create a perfect look for any occasion.

It’s no question that basic tops are one of the most versatile garments you could own. They’re great for mixing, matching and layering. If you’re going on a long trip and can only bring one suitcase then a variety of solid-color shirts is your best choice. Not only are you able to layer them with jackets, but you can jazz up each one with different accessories. Scarfs and necklaces can also be mix and matched with a variety of tops.

Besides keeping up with the weather predictions and style, it’s a good idea to bring an outfit that is dressy and professional. You never know when an amazing opportunity could strike. A nice pair of dress pants, a pencil skirt, and a blazer are must-haves. A pencil skirt can be dressed down to be casual with a simple top or dolled up for a night out. A blazer can triple as a layering factor with a pair of boyfriend jeans for both warmth in the cold and professionalism.

When it comes to comfort, sweat pants can double as pajamas. Leggings can be dressed up or down and won’t take up much space in a suitcase. If you like to stay fit on vacation, a black pair of athletic leggings can also work for a casual outfit or lounge wear.

If you’re going to choose one type of clothing that won’t be packed lightly then aim for undergarments. Underwear, bras, and socks are everyday essentials that aren’t usually worn twice without washing. Since you typically won’t know your laundering options, it’s always a smart decision to pack more than needed for back-up.

These days nearly any cosmetic or toiletry item comes in travel-size. However, sometimes they can get thrown away during security. Luckily, expensive items such as perfumes come in rollerball sizes that fit nicely in the zipper of a purse or tote bag.

Finally, the bulkiest part of packing: shoes. There’s tennis shoes for walking, professional heels, fancy heels for nights out, sandals for style, and boots for warmth. With so many different types, how is it possible to pick enough that still fit in a small bag? Think of the types of activities you will be doing and prepare accordingly. If you’re doing a lot of walking, a shoe with a lot of support will be needed. However, a boot can keep you warm and stylish and a little black heel can be professional and dressy.

When it comes to packing for a week-long vacation or a semester-long study abroad program, it’s always a smart idea to pack efficiently. Don’t forget to make room for the goods you picked up during your vacation shopping, too.

Happy packing!
