Muslim Designer Breaks Fashion Molds at NYFW With Collection Featuring Hijabs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

Fashion history was made this year after designer, Anniesa Hasibuan, showed a collection featuring hijab clad women at New York fashion week. The collection was met with a standing ovation; a rare sight in fashion.

The Muslim designer was the first designer from Indonesia to show at an official NYFW venue. Forty-eight looks were sent down the runway, each model having been outfitted with a hijab.

The designer listed her inspiration as being her hometown of Jakarta, Indonesia. Her kimono inspired designs were made of colorful silks, velvet, and adorned with elaborate jewels. Her army of models presented a diverse and breathtaking runway show.

In a statement to CNN, Hasibuan wrote, “I am so proud and thankful for everyone on the team who helped me so this event could happen, and I am thankful to international and local media from Indonesia for exposing my show. I did not realize the result can be this amazing, and I am thrilled and humbled by the welcome reaction given

It can be easy for a collection to go unnoticed at Fashion Week with so many designs being shown each year. Though, it doesn’t look like this designer will be fading into the background anytime soon. Hasibuan has continued to receive praise from the media for her originality and daring designs.

This was only Hasibuan’s second collection since debuting in 2015
