Meet Swing Dancing Club President, Meghan Olson!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

Name: Meghan Olson

Hometown: Rosemount, MN

Major: Early Childhood Education, Spanish minor

Year in school: Sophomore

1.     Why did you choose Stout?

Stout was actually the 13th of 13 schools that I toured, and after being on campus for just five minutes I knew I would be going to school here. I didn’t even apply to another school! Everyone was so welcoming, there were some many benefits about the school in general, it was a perfect distance from home, and the Education program is amazing; I couldn’t pass it up.

2.     I hear you are the president of the swing dancing club here at Stout, can you tell HC a little more about that?

For sure! Stout Swing Club is an awesome organization that meets every Wednesday night in the ballrooms of the MSC. We meet 7:30 to 10, and teach different moves in swing dancing. Throughout the year, we also bring in professional dancers from the Twin Cities or Eau Claire to teach other styles of ballroom dance, such as waltz, foxtrot, quick step, and latin/ rhythm dances such as the salsa and tango. No partner of previous dance experience is necessary, and it is always free! It is a great break during the middle of the week from classes and a busy schedule to relax and just dance.

3.     How long has this been a club at Stout?

Swing Club has been at Stout approximately eight years now.

4.     What made you want to get involved in swing dancing?

I started swing dancing as a freshman in highschool- a few friends took me to the Wabasha Stret Caves in St. Paul my freshman year and taught me…I was hooked right away! It is such a fun, energetic partner dance.

5.     What other activities are you involved in on campus?

I am also involved in the Student Wisconsin Education Association (I serve as the Vice President), the Chamber Choir, and theatre productions!

6.     What is your favorite thing about Stout?

My favorite things (I can’t pick just one…) about Stout are…

1.      The welcoming environment that allows (and encourages!) everyone to just be themselves.

2.     The countless amount of opportunities to learn, grow, and have fun! From 150 student organizations to guest speakers, conferences, and events, as well as so many opportunities to learn and grow within my major…I know I will be prepared to be a teacher thanks to all of the amazing people I’ve met and opportunities offered here at Stout.

7.     What are your plans after you graduate?

I plan to move back to Minnesota-somewhere around the Cities hopefully- and teach in an elementary school. I cannot wait to start teaching.

Speed Round:

Favorite Food: Pasta or Stir-fry

Ideal date night: Movie night in, or seeing a play/musical!

Biggest Pet Peeve: Slow walkers! I walk really fast so slow walkers (especially when I can’t get around them) drive me crazy!
