A Freshman’s Guide to Adventure

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

College is a time for adventure and new experiences.  It’s a chance to push your boundaries and try things you’ve never tried before.  After all, they say life begins at the edge of your comfort zone.

But as a freshman in college, it can be difficult to tread outside the comfort zone we’ve grown to love while living at home.  All of our newfound freedom is quite the adjustment.  But whether you’ve had the chance to branch out, or haven’t recognized the opportunity, there is so much that can be gained from experiencing different things and finding new passions and interests.  You can learn so much about yourself through it.  So here are a few tips to get you started on your journey to adventure!

1. Attend any and all campus events.

Whether it’s trying your hand at Jimmy Fallon-style lip-singing in a res-hall competition, or catching a few laughs from a BDP comedian, putting yourself out there can lead to newfound friendships and discovered talents.  Whether you know the people attending or fly solo, you’ll enjoy having the entertainment of good company and great fun.

2. Don’t knock it ’til you try it.

This may sound so easy a caveman can do it, because it is.  But why haven’t you thought about it before? You think too much.  Say yes to everything.  We’re not encouraging anything harmful or morally incorrect, but think about all of the opportunities you have missed because you talked yourself out of trying it.  The next time that girl from class invites you to that zumba event, think twice before excusing yourself to watch your favorite TV show.

3. Seek opportunity.

Whoever said opportunity had to knock for you to open the door?  Rather than waiting for an invite or an obligation that may never come, seek out new hobbies or invite others to try something new with you.  Scour the newspaper for local events that catch your interest.  Things won’t always work out the way you want.  You have to make them work for you.
