Flooding in Houston Causes Billions in Damages

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

Massive flooding in Houston, Texas on Monday killed seven people, flooded 1,000 homes and caused more than five billion dollars in damage.

Governor Greg Abbott declared a state of disaster for nine counties in and around the Houston area. Some areas are recovering, but more rain coming in the days to come could leave other areas still submerged.

The cause of the flooding is Cypress Creek in Northwest Houston. Heavy rainfall has caused the creek’s water levels to continue to rise, and it still has not stopped. The rainfall resulted from a stationary area of low pressure over the western United States, allowing moisture from the Gulf of Mexico to flow into Texas over the last few days, according to CNN meteorologist Sean Morris.

As of Tuesday, 240 billion gallons of rain have fallen, and 123,000 homes have lost power.
