Fashion is for Everyone

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

Fashion is for everyone. Or, at least, it’s supposed to and should be. Sadly, the majority of the fashion industry does not factor in everyone. Whether it is a matter of money, size, or style—there seems to be a universally exclusive, niche market for fashion.

Think of the last fashion advertisement or magazine you saw or read. Who was featured in it? What were they wearing? How would you describe them?

Exactly.

While the industry has made some improvements at being more inclusive of different people and styles, it is not enough—after all, what motivates such decisions? Is it out of the well-being and desire for a more welcoming and inclusive industry? Or is it something designers and companies do to improve their image? An inclusive fashion industry is what we need. We need an industry that represents the beauty in everyone—not just one type of person. A publication that is doing an amazing job with this is Darling Magazine. They don’t Photoshop any of their models, feature a wide variety of people, and divide their articles into different segments for their readers (e.g.: the dreamer, intellectual, hostess etc.). This needs to serve as a model for the rest of the industry.

Fashion is for you. It’s for me. It’s for everyone. Let’s make it happen.
