Deep Dark and Dangerous Lipstick Tips and Tricks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

We all know how scary it can be to try new things with our set makeup routine. Dark lipstick is one of these things. This is definitely something that is trending on and off the runway this year. Follow this article to not only learn how to apply it properly, but how to make it last.

Deciding on a Color

Skin tone plays a large role in deciding which color will work best, but don’t forget to match it with your eye and hair color. This will help assist you in pulling off the best lipstick possible.

Here are some guidlines to follow according to skin tone:

Fair Skin: The options are basically endless. Most colors go well with this type of tone. However, in the vampy/ Game of Thrones color scheme, shoot for merlot and burgundy colors. If you feel extra daring, reach for the black lipstick and test it out.

Olive Skin: Jewel-like colors will bring out your gorgeous complexion. Colors that fit this category include deep purples, burgundy, and mahogany.

Medium Skin: Try applying colors that fit in the deep plum section. These hues will bring out the color of your skin and pull everything together.

Dark Skin: Berry and dark red lipstick colors will match extremely well.

Prep and Apply

The infographic below gives a good step-by-step example on how to apply everything without going extremely into detail.

However, the most important step is to exfoliate. Make sure your lips are as smooth as possible before applying. Skipping this step will result in cracks in the color as well as flakiness. It will also result in a very poor lipstick experience. You can use a normal exfoliator or you can try something made just for lips, like Elf’s Lip Exfoliator shown in the first step below.

Another important step most people forget is to spend time on the rest of your makeup. It won’t look as good if your lipstick is competing with skin redness or an uneven complexion. Use a good foundation, clean liner, and shape your eyebrows to make everything flow together.

Making It Last

The best way to do this is by using a translucent powder and reapplying, as shown above in the step-by-step picture. It will help keep your color intact throughout your routine including meals and anything you drink.
